when i was in jw land, i used to like keeping a copy of each magazine, i did this for years, then one day my mom found them in my closet, and chewed me out for keeping them ( ??????? go figure)

She said magazines were for PLACING not keeping, do you know how much money you wasted, i might of been 13 or so at the time, i never forgot that experience.

Anyone else have similar experiences regarding literature ???

We once lived in a congregation territory where the elders refused to allow us more than one copy of any publication (us = my rather large family). They said it was wasteful. I said since I was donating for it (and before that arrangement had paid a fixed price for each item) that it was up to me how many items I had.

One Sunday two elders came over to discuss the matter with us. I tactfully brought up a point from a magazine. They asked to see it. I handed them the bound volume and then motioned for all the family members to crowd around them in order to see the material. One of the elders asked what was going on and I told him that if we didn't have one copy each, that is what we would have to do in order to study.

They got the point but still wouldn't order literature for us. We moved.

I heard from somebody that people actually collect Watchtowers and Awakes like they were comic books.

Most dub homes have bookcases replete with bound volumes and other Society publications but little else.

It seemed to me that dubs are very uneducated in respect of literature generally.

I'm sure the society would rather have people get rid of their original magazines and get the bound volumes or cd-rom. That makes it easier for them to change things when it suits them, as in this example of the Jan 1/1989 Watchtower.

My dub in-laws must be abnormal... they have a couple stacks of old mags. The oldest one I have seen in the stacks (yes, I have dug through...) was 2000, so that's not terribly old. They also have a few select mags from the past ten years - probably less than a dozen - of "notable" topics that I guess were important to them. Plus they have all the bound editions and other literature.

(They do have a lot of non-dub literature, too; they are BIG into the classics.)

I keep each copy of the Watchtower and Awake! magazines since 1999...I don't want to be off guard when they change something embarassing in a bound volume, (like they did for the January 1st 1989 Watchtower magazine), I will still have the original!

I threw them away as fast as I could!
