The average KH has 3 contribution boxes

"Worldwide Work" which goes to NYC headquarters to be used for promoting the WTS message

"KH Building" which also goes to NYC headquarters to be used for building kingdom halls and assembly halls

"Local KH" which goes to the local congregation to pay utilities, mortgage payments, upkeep, expenses for the local congregation.

Some congregations also have a separate fund for maintenance and that money comes from box #3 through a resolution presented to and voted on by the congregation.

The money from the literature is supposed to go into Box #1. Many JWs seem to forget to put any money from requested donations from the public as seen by this December 2003 announcement to local congregations:

As a reminder to the brothers handling the congregation accounts, donations placed in the boxes for the Worldwide Work and for the Kingdom Hall Fund are to be remitted monthly and should not be used for payment on a Kingdom Hall property loan or for any other congregation expense.

The donations technically are not for the literature but to support the preaching work. That has been the case since 1990.

Those at Bethel (other countries too) get approximately $100 monthly in allowance/subsidies (travel expense, clothing). They have taken a "vow of poverty" so that the IRS does not tax them. They may be given money by those in their congregation but it is not required. Speakers from Bethel to other locales have their expenses paid, airfare, hotel, transportation, meals, definitely first class.

The circuit overseers and district overseers (elders who travel to visit congregations and circuits--20 congregations) get an allowance as well, a leased car provided (paid by the WTS), paid health expenses, and each congregation they visit pays their expenses for that week (gas, stamps/stationery, car repair, etc.). The local congregations feed them. Various ones in the congregation give them cash under the table, many hoping to influence them as far as spiritual "privileges" such as giving talks at assemblies, being appointed MS/elder, or other administrative positions in connection with the assemblies/conventions.

I'm sure I have left things out.

I hope, farmer, you are getting the drift that your brother in law will not be acceptable as a non-JW husband. Listen to jgnat who knows. She is not a JW but her husband is and they treat both of them like crap.

I personally think that a great deal really goes into printing. When I visited the German branch they said they use paper worth 50,000 EUR (100.000 DEM back then) a day.

And I have the feeling that money does not flow that easily since switching to the donation arrangement.

No problem, farmer. I'm considered an "inactive" JW because I don't turn in a time slip to the congregation. After answering your questions, I feel like I'm "active" again, but I won't be turning in a slip.
