Okay, so I've been trying to figure out what I can do to help JWs out. Obviously, no one can force someone to think, but sometimes a thought-provoking question can get the gears turning. So I hit upon this idea of placing ads in a weekly newspaper here in Seattle. The back page is kind of a bulletin board, with random, unclassified ads. You can purchase a large one for only 22 bucks. I like the idea of this paper because the only Witnesses that would be reading it would be pretty liberal, and it seems that they stand a better chance of waking up.

I want to place ads that are thought-provoking, but not heavy-handed. Rather than coming out with something like "You protect pedophiles!", I would be thinking more along the lines of a question like, "What is unconditional love? Why is it important?"

I want the ads to contain a lot of whitespace. Maybe something like this:

    JWs
Is it honest to avoid information
    that challenges your beliefs?

I want to start each ad with the initials as above because for Witnesses, those initials stand out from a page like the word sex. For me, it would have been virtually impossible for me to see the back cover of a paper like this and not notice something like that.

So here's the call to action: Help me come up with candidates for my ads. I'm thinking of placing one every couple weeks. Very short, as the example above. I might add an email address at the end, like [email protected], but I wonder if perhaps that will dilute the quality of the message.

    What are your thoughts?

Your idea is brilliant. The web link is critical. The major problem from within the org is on-line curiosity, whether that be internet porn or scorn.

    NiceGuy,

A contradictory scriptural or WT quote (?) .. just a thought to add to the mix.

Isn't there a scripture that says something like 'examine all things'?

    Brainstorming is fun!

    Seattleniceguy,

How about: "You protect pedophiles!"...crap, you said that one won't fly.

I think the UN/NGO issue would disturb any Dub who knows about it. How about: "Why Did The Watchtower Society Join The United Nations?"

"If Jehovah's Witnesses Have Love Among Themselves... Why Am I Hurting?"

"What Is The Difference Between "New Light" And Failed Prophecy?"...Nothing.

SNG, that is a fabulous idea! You are a sly dog!

    How about something like,

Isn't believing information without checking it the same as believing hearsay? The Bible says to test ALL things--even the WT.

If you can't join the YMCA to use the pool, should the WT join the UN for a library card?

Why did Hayden Covington say JWs were to believe in false prophecy for the sake of unity, or be disfellowshiped? (Give reference here for URL with quote)

Why is there a pyramid for CT Russel's tombstone? (URL here)

If 607 is utterly disproven as the date for the temple's destruction, what does this imply?

    How many times must Armageddon come? 1914? 1918? 1925? 1975? 2000? 2034?

Millions Now Living will Never Die. Did God's Channel really say this about 1925?

There are many, many more ideas. I'll let others pick up...

Doctrines vs conscience issues? It all depends on which year you are a JW.

Which mistake did Catholics make that the Watchtower hasn't committed in a worse way?

God gave you the RESPONSIBILITY to question: Prov. 3:21, not to "Avoid Independent Thinking".

You got me thinking too much about this now!

Instead of an email addy, why not a http? freeminds.org would be a good one...

sorry I don't have any catchy questions right now, but it's a great idea. We have one of those papers here in Portland too. (Willamette Week) and when we used to go out as young (rebellious?) dubbies, we'd always get the WW and read the ads...

Good idea SNG. I've been kicking around a similar idea.

My thoughts on what you are doing:

    a) do it consistantly. Get that same ad space every issue for a substancial stretch of time, if you can. Maybe we can help with money. It would be nice for us to do it all over the country, but perhaps it would be smarter to help you, and use Seattle to "prove the concept".

    b) Don't speak to witnesses at all. Speak to "worldly" people. This will give the witnesses license to see what you have to say about them to the worldly people, even if you put out something they might otherwise shutdown about. Force them to feel competative. Your ad about examing ones religion might be more like this:

    Jehovah's Witnesses
tell you to honestly examine your religion
I've yet to meet a Jehovah's Witness who
    will make the same
    examination of their religion

    go to:
    www.badreligion.com/examine
to see what they'd find out if they did

    c) the e-mail or web link is important, both to get a feel for how the concept is working, and also to give inquiring ones a hand. Along with the thought of "proving the concept", perhaps a web page just for each variety of ad you run, with a more detailed explanation of the problem, and links to Quotes site, or other pertinant materials.

I like one of Bebu's too:

If Jerusalem didn't fall in 607
    should Jehovah's Witnesses really
be bothering us on Saturday mornings?
