    Blueblades:

Then I showed them the article in the Awake mag.that showed the C.O. riding one in the field service in different parts of the world.

When I was a teen, my younger brother had a small off-road scooter (Honda CT-70, iirc). Then that genious of a C.O. (Jack Danley, a.k.a. Jack Daniels) found out, he made some (negative) comment about it (reckless view of gift of life, etc).

At his next visit, my brother shows him the Witchpower rag (or was it Asleep!) with the story of some poor sister in some far-off mountain land who spends hours every day on her scooter, on dangerous mountain roads, to get to service/meetings.

According to my brother, the colour of Jack's face was fuscia.

The area I spent most of my growing up/raising kids and being a JW years was rural and everyone bar none had at least dirt bikes. It was one of the witness gathering things we all did was go to a dry lake bed and day camp everyone brought their bikes, ATVs, dune buggies or whatever.

Several groups of us from all over SoCal and Arizona made semi annual pilgrimages to the dunes in SoCal where we camped for days like a small circuit assembly, we even had *clears throat* ummhumm the Watchtower study there! Yes there were always several elders there and might I add lots of drinking going on! LOTS!

Well I guess it was a small step from going to dirt bikes (when we were young and careless) to Harley's (when we were dumb and dumber). The venue became biker bars instead of camping and just how slutty could you look in your leathers and get away with it, yes elders too. I remember more than one Friday nite at a biker bar watching the brothers getting tipsy (I didn't drink then nor do I now) and hearing them discuss going out in service Sat. morning! I still have my Harley leathers, but I left my helmet in my old apartment when I moved away.

You know I've thought a lot about this, the days of really being very worldly while I was a JW and funny thing is I always felt like I was in my skin while being worldly and not congruent with myself when I was really trying to put on that Christian personality. Now that I'm so far away from the double standards I have to say I love being me, but mostly being free from the judgments of the JW's.

Now days my bike of choice is a bicycle, yeah that's right I'm a bikerchic! I've traded my leathers and heavy helmet for the lightweight lycra and airo-dynamic micro-mold helmet and I love it! Pedal Power Rocks!

Oh and in defense of bike riders (bicycle) I've known a few JW's who were cyclist and did some bike events locally, they were just really low profile about it and of course made sure that the event didn't support Babylon the Great in some way, lol. I got in some trouble when I raised money for Leukemia Society of America, go figure! And the usual visit by the elders about spending too much time training for a bicycle event and not going out in service. Going to biker bars is OK, uplifting and wholesome activity for a Christian when the elders are present, eh? LOL

I had a KH125 whilst still in the borg - the freedom it gave me for getting about more than made up for occasional snide comments about respect for the life I have been given etc.

I wonder what they'd make of my bike now - a 1500GL SE Goldwing, all airbrushed up with Bison, Wolves, Eagles, American indians etc and called "Spirit of the Wing." Guess it'd be ok if I added 'Holy' to the front of its name and replaced 'Wing' with 'WT' !!!

Seems strange though about being couneselled over owning a motorcycle... an old acquaintance in my old congregation has recently purchased himself a brand new Subaru Impreza WRX - I wonder how he justified it.... "Can get around more return visits in an hour ??? I can witness to the guy I just beat in a race???"

    Welcome to the board Blobby,

    And welcome also too HappyDad,

Yes there is an attitude but it varies from cong to cong, more influenced by the overall JW tendency to be judgment and self-righteous rather than WT policy. This congregation here has a significant club of cyclist, mostly big cruisers, which was nearly 30% appointed servants.

However, in the Midwest congregation (Canton Mo.) a bike was barely tolerated. We were there 'serving where the need was great' and they barely tolerated us. At one time, at about 32 years of age, I had the motorcycle and decided to grow a beard too. Got away with it for a while probably because I was the PO. Finally caused a big stink.

    Blueblades,

I was in the Rockaway Beach congregation for many years. Were you near the area?

I bought a 1000cc superbike last year when I was still going to the meeting's, I had no bad comments but it was seen to be "questionable" and could tell that the elders disaproved, I'm a bit firey when confronted so nobody did !

They couldn't say too much as the PO drives the latest BMW's, it was one of those "well to do congs".

It had a definate "the have's & have nots". We were in the click until I stepped down, then we were dropped like a stone especially by the elders.
