    >This sounds like metaphysical gobble-de-goop to me, along the lines of "If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, is there any >sound?" Well of course there's sound,...

When a tree falls it displaces air, when humans are around they perceive this displacing of air as sound in their ears.

It all comes down on how we perceive and filter incoming signals in our brain.

It's all an illusion as some would say...

If a tree falls in a vaccum...

Of course, that then poses the question, how would a tree survive to grow in a vaccum??

In the case of energy transformation, a potential energy source (candle) becomes a heat and light energy source over a period of time.
Could the same be said of the human consciousness (or is it more like a bomb going off, thana candle)??

    LT "gobble-de-gook" class

PS. Who's this "Gook" character, anyways??

Take a tree out into the vacuum of space, then... oh, I guess it wouldn't "fall" in a zero-G environment, huh?

I was thinking more like on another heavenly body (such as the moon), rather than in the emptiness of space - which reminds me - how did the USA flag flap, on the moon???

how did the USA flag flap

    Who said it flapped?

It stays up because there's a horizontal crossbar supporting it along the top edge. It may flap when they were moving the flag around, but once it is set in place it shouldn't move again.

(Actually the moon does have a miniscule atmosphere...)

    It did!

The Americans installed a little solar powered fan underneath it so everyone could see old glory from the earth with binoculars.

    Alan,

As a fundie I occasionally watched as this "tree in the forest" subject was debated and always thought the debaters were a little touched. Now I find myself for the first time addressing the subject.

NO. The tree does not make a sound. Does the tree produce energy patterns that we mammals interpret as sound? YES. The falling tree only generates energy waves. There are all sorts of other energy waves produce by any such phenomena that we do not detect because we do not have built into us the sensing apparatus to detect those energy frequencies. We can detect energy through air that we perceive as sound and we can detect energy waves through solids we experience as vibrations. The bottom line is, unless a "conscious" individual is there to detect the energy and perceive or experience it, then all that happened is a wide spectrum of undetected energy is released, nun of which is perceived as sound. The fall made the energy, but is was not experience as sound.

Sorry if this sounds like I'm agreeing with Craig. He IS touched

How about if you put a tape recorder in the area where the tree fell with no human around......then that human went back and listened to the recording? Would the tape recorder record any sound? Of course it would.
