    Whew!

You can tell you live in North America.

The lovely, cute and so-called skunk, when it encounters the automobile: WHEW

My fellow Americans and Canadians: you know full well the smell of a dead skunk.

We'll leave you with the lyrics of Loudon Wainwright III.

Crossing the highway late last night
He shoulda looked left and he shoulda looked right
He didn't see the station wagon car
The skunk got squashed and, there you are:

    You got your
Dead skunk in the middle of the road
Dead skunk in the middle of the road
Dead skunk in the middle of the road
    Stinking to high heaven

Take it from me, that ain't no rose
Roll up the window and hold your nose
You don't have to look and you don't have to see
You can feel it in your olfactory

    You got your
Dead skunk in the middle of the road
Dead skunk in the middle of the road
Dead skunk in the middle of the road
    Stinking to high heaven

    (Now STINK!)

Well you got your dead cat and you got your dead dog
On a moonlight night you got your dead toad frog
You got your dead rabbit and your dead raccoon
Aw, the blood and the guts are gonna make you swoon

    You got your
Dead skunk in the middle of the road
Dead skunk in the middle of the road
Dead skunk in the middle of the road
    Stinking to high heaven

    (All OVER the road!)

    - Loudon Wainwright III

T'is the season of our favourite scented North American mammal.

    Hey Ray!!

That's an old favorite song for the long ride up to the campground.

For anyone who's never heard it, here's a link (requires RealPlayer to work)

    Dead Skunk

    Enjoy!

    Love, Scully

Believe it or not, I grew up with this song. I found it when I was about 7 years old, and I bought an 8-track at a second hand store that someone recorded on.

Strangely enough, after it has been scraped from the road, and then braised with butter and garlic, it seems to lose it's smell, and does not leave you with" Skunk Breath"......

Yes, that was a joke!!! (I always omit the butter as it is too fattening)

Ha Ha That is too funny. Skunks are brazen creatures as well. At one campground we frequent regularly, they will come out at night and actually waddle right underneath your lawn chairs, while you're sitting there, scrounging for snack scraps. We've learned to move very slowly, when they do that, but you can shout at them and throw pebbles at them to "shoo" them away. But they are usually in no hurry to leave, and take their own sweet time, until they move to the next campsite.

Oh. And we make sure we put the dogs inside the trailer. They never seem to learn that that white striped "Pepe LePeu" dosen't want to play.

My sister's car was the next one in line after a skunk got squashed just a week or so ago. when I called my son, the first thing he told me about is how awful the car smells. that is one thing I do not miss leaving Kansas, skunks and tornados. Alaska is getting better and better all the time. Pam

It took me 5 years to figure out that the occasional nasty smell that wafted into the car was roadkill skunk.
