Well, I have a GMail account ...

... all I need now is a good dollop of spam so I can test the searching and filtering !

I must say, having 1Gb of space for free is quite 'wierd'. The Hotmail account I have hovers on the 80% full mark (mainly from spam) and is to all purposes unusable. I only have email from people I know going into my inbox.

So far, Gmail looks quite nice ... a few new ideas in how email can be organised which is refreshing and nice to see.

I haven't had a look at GMail yet but I noticed my Yahoo email box has been expanded from 4 MB to 100MB effective today. I wonder if that's a response to GMail.

I've heard of the new GMail, and that not many people had them because it was still on an experimental basis. Quite frankly, I'm a little jelous.

I can't wait for gmail to become more available.

My Yahoo accounts have always been 6mb not 4mb cos I signed up for them over 5 years ago when it was 6mb... but *who care* about 2mb when now there's magically 100mb! Hurrah!

The downsides to gmail are that it's impossible to delete mail (not certain), and that your messages get searched for keywords to direct google's text ads at you. But the ad-directing thing probably happens on Yahoo and Hotmail with them not being as up front about it.

There is a delete (trash can) system but as they say, they encourage you to archive things in order to keep them for searching etc...

The ads are unobtrusive and very similar to the Google search-ads. I actually find these quite useful and often search for things and look at the ads instead of the results.

The only drawback I can see with all of these free systems is backup. Saving all the emails you ever get is *great* ... until they all vanish and you normally don't have any comeback (hey, you didn't pay anything remember?!)

I hope they will offer some sort of downloading to offline storage. An outlook interface would be good but the problem is that if you take away the web interface, you take away the ad revenue stream and the service stops.

There really is no such thing as a completely free lunch !

I remember posting about this back in April but didn't start up an account .. waiting for the kinks to get out of it first.

    my post was:

    "Google starting new service, G-mail.

G-mail will provide users with a huge one gigabyte (1GB) of FREE storage, making the need to clean out the e-mail box inbox irrelevent for most people.

The companies believe the new service will rewire the way information is retrieved in e-mail messages.

G-mail will automatically organise e-mail according to topic and allow users to search their messages --including who it is from, the text and subject lines---in the sam way they search the Internet.

Google says they are also looking at this as a way for google users to stay loyal...as changing search engines is easy..and changing e-mail provider is more of a chore.

Right now google is consulted 138.000 times a minute in 90 languages across the world.

Sounds like this new G-mail will be a great thing. I get sick of dumping my e-mail from Yahoo and MSN..

Yes, yahoo responded to gmail by giving us 100 mb so that we can keep more messages. They are trying to compete with google.
