There are two reasons why I'd go back to the JWs...

I was thinking about this the other day in response to the question, "Am I coming back?" put forward by JW who called me (a former friend). I said that I would not answer that question since it would put her in an uncomfortable position. It did get me thinking, though -- under what circumstances would I go back to the Witnesses? Upon reflection I have come up with two possible routes for my return to Dubdom.

    1) The Society radically changes both it's belief system and it's organizational structure. They would have to give up all literal/traditional interpretations of the Bible and be open to other religions.

    2) I go insane.

That's it! Somehow I feel the second route is more likely than the first.

I'd consider going back for these reasons, but the first one needs to be slightly ammended. I would want to see the Governing Body? douse themselves with gasoline and set themselves ablaze on national television. Just to prove they're sincere about the changes.

Then you wouldn't be going back to JW's because without their belief structure, they wouldn't exist as JW's. You would be going back to religion.

Bradley.....even if they changed, their primary belief would be based on the bible. Would you go back to believing it too?

    Gumby,

I can accept a "soft" Biblical hermeneutic. If viewed primarily metaphorically, the Bible can actually make a lot of sense. Not all parts, mind you.

I have a hard time believing they, at least most everyone in my family anyway, would go along with any radical changes. They would probably start up their own new, stricter version of JWs, or jump into the first abusive religion that came along their way.

So, Logansrun, no hot young pioneer babe could lure you back?

    Interesting.

For me, the damage has already been done. Even if somehow it were discovered that they actually did have the "Truth"-(Fat chance), I still would rather die, knowing the irreversible heartache that they have caused myself and others. I no longer believe in any type of Religion that involves an "Omnipotent" God, and am having a very hard time believing in a "God" at all for that matter. Growing up in the Org. I truly loved and believed-(Past tense) in Jehovah. But, just as I would not be in an abusive relationship with a partner, I also choose to not be in a relationship with anyone, be it a friend, a "God", an Organization, or anything else that would destroy my (Or other's) life by causing pain, and wreaking havoc to one's very existence.

    hhhmmmmmmm....

The fact that you can identify reasons may proves that your second option may have has already come to pass.

    edited for emphasis.

    itsallgoodnow,

Yes, the changes to the Society would be so enormous and radical that they would not even be recognized today as in any way being JW. Think liberal Episcopaleans with a Zen flair.

Hmmm...hot pioneer chick, huh? Well, that does get me thinking. There was a very cute sister that I think liked me in the last hall I was at. She kind of looked like that girl from "A Beutiful Mind", what's her name? Jennifer Connely. But she was thoroughly brainwashed into the group. I just wouldn't be able to deal with that.

Now...if there was a double-lifer, hot JW girl who thorougly disbeleived it but wanted to stay in for her family....well, then I might have to pull a Second Coming (no pun intended) for her sake!

Huh????? Where'd you get the idea that the WTS had "traditional", even "literal", interpretations of the Bible?

Quite the opposite is really the case.
