Some films have been released recently on DVD that I thought were really good. I give 'em all a big thumbs up. If you see them, let me know what you thought of them.

    1. "Touching The Void"

The true story of two mountain climbers that got themselves in one hell of a mess. With almost no provisions left, on the descent thousands of feet up, one of the climbers breaks his leg. His buddy works to help him get down but they got caught in a huge storm. The line is cut and the injured climber falls into a crevasse where he begins his struggle to crawl down the mountain on his own. Based on the book of the same name.

    2. "Fog of War"

An Oscar winning documentary. Learn what policymakers in the US government are really like. Like you don't know already because of Simon (lol) Robert McNamara recounts stories of firebombing Japanese cities in World War II and his legacy of the Vietnam War. He has 11 lessons on how NOT to repeat the mistakes of the past. His insights are remarkable and sharp. His stories about the Cuban Missile Crisis are frightening. If only McNamara could have figured out the most important lesson of all.

    3. "Dirty Pretty Things"

The story of an illegal immigrant in London who is trying to survive and make money in a system that takes advantage of people like him. Then one night, he realizes something very sinister is going on at the hotel he is the night clerk of. He can't go to the police because it is too risky. Great acting, good characters, with a riveting ending.

    4. "City of God"

The story of a group of kids growing up in Brazil's third world slum "City of God." It is a true story and focuses on one of the boys looking for a way out of a life of poverty and crime, where violence and killing are the norm, who loves photography. With subtitles. Violent, funny, and really great direction.

    2. Fog of War very interesting because it gave the background and thinking of what was going on during the Kennedy administration. I didn't realize how close to WWIII or setting off nuclear weapons during that time period.

It amazed me how one or two individuals have the power to destroy thousands and thousands of individuals with their decisions.

I enjoyed the history of it, too.

Now, we just went and saw Stepford Wives. Anyone want to talk about THAT one! lol

Saw Dirty Pretty Things and City of God at the cinema over here.

Both very good films. I wanted to see City of God again straight after watching it. I didn't though as it was the last showing.

    So,

Is Saved and Mean Girls any good? I rather like comedies with a bit of bite to them.

I saw it, incredible movie, though in the two short months since I've seen it I've already forgotten a lot of it.

The scene where the one dude (Lil' Z?) forces the one little kid shoot the other, that seemed too real, I'm not convinced that it wasn't.

Did you happen to see The Weather Underground? Great documentary film.

I really want to see Fog of War, that one's at the top of my list.

Do you go to the movies with SixofNine? He's recommended all four of those to me.

I rented Dirty Pretty Things because of the title - thought there'd be lots of sex. It's a great movie - despite the dearth of sex. Loved the ending. I like unpredictable plot twists like that, especially since you can usually predict most movies' endings about 30 minutes after they start.

City of God was one of the best movies I saw last year...I am excited to see it again soon.

    Dan,

I didn't see "The Weather Underground" but it's on the list.

    HempLover,

I think I saw every one of those movies with Six, now that I think about it. We are fortunate to have three theaters in Dallas that show small indy type films so we have a lot of good stuff to choose from.
