I'm wanting to start researching my genealogy. I really don't know much about my family.
Has anyone else done this? What is the best place to start?

Hey Desi...depending on your point of origin as it were here's a big list of useful links by category.

If you are still where your fam is from then try the historical society and also go ask for birth records for fam members as far back as they can find. It helps when you start digging more and possibly paying for help.
Sincerely,

Never done it, I would like to.
Wish this guy was my dad!
I am seriously into genealogy. A really good source is www.familysearch.org It's the Mormon site, and has a wealth of info. Click on "Search for Ancestors" and have fun.
I have done a small amount of research into my family background, found out that a great great great how many times I do not know, was one of several other gentlemen who invented the game of billiards and also the pinball machine, though I do need to make a most definite clarification of this to make sure this is totally correct. What is known is that the family had during the last century a very large bakery business covering several English counties Welsh borders. Supposedly the old boy died, not before his solicitor married him prior to his death 2 months later taking the huge family fortune with her, this apparently sometime in the early 70's. I also have two great great great aunts who in Kidderminster lived to 105 and 103 years old respectively, they were known as the Badland sisters and today there are still street names bearing their name.
I don't know about where you live, where your public records are held, but here in the UK, a good place to start would be the local library to check the births, marriages and deaths, of course, there are several good internet sites dedicated to this department as well as obviously employing someone to do all the research for you.
All the best in your search!!
Thanks Valis. I am not where my family is so I was going to do whatever online research I could and then if I have to I'll pay for a little bit of additional information.
Stephanie..

Thanks Mulan...hehe, just another interest we have in common. I thought I would scrapbook my family tree once I have it complete. Actually, that is the only site I've been to so far. I found some interesting stuff but I'm not really sure if the people I'm thinking might be related actually are. The names are so common I'm just not sure.

wow, that is a neat discovery.
Hey desi,
is another good one. I have been to almost all of the sites that others have listed, and you can get good info. from all of them. On my Dad's side of the family, I have been able to trace so far back to the 1750's, and have a detailed list of family members, and where they originated, and settled. I have even found a distant cousin who has pictures of my family going all the way back to the 1860's, showing my ggggg Grandmother, my gggg grandparents, ggg grandparents, and gg grandparents, along with aunts, uncles, etc., and have also found divorce records, slave bills, and all kinds of other info. There is a subsite to Rootsweb, where you can actually look at the ship logs from Ellis Island, and was able to find the page that has my great-grandfather's name, his signature, where he stayed in NY when he arrived in 1911. It is soooo much fun doing the research. It will take a very long time, but you will be rewarded for your efforts! If you have any other questions, or need any help, let me know!!! Do be aware, that there are times when things were misspelled on Census forms, etc, due to everything being hand-logged at the time, and it will be an extra challenge to cross reference names, etc. but can be done. Do not give up!!! If you find out the town and counties that your family lived in during a certain time period, you can also go to the US census records for those particular areas, and there you can find their addresses, occupations, number of children in the family, and all of there names. My family settled in Stewart County, TN, in 1803, and fortunately, Stewart county has it's own genealogical website, and have been able to gather a lot from there. There are a lot of other towns, and counties that likewise have detailed records going way back.
Good luck, and have FUN!!!
Thanks, Ohio....
I just took a quick look at the site and think I may have stumbled upon something...
