Would you marry not for love but for a visa?

I know a Filipina girl who asked a Navy man to marry her so she could come to the US and become a citizen. He was much older than she, but they ended up falling in love and are still married about 15 years later. I studied with her, and she loved learning it all so much. She was an orphan and her mother had studied in the Phillipines, so I think it made her feel close to her.

I had to write a letter for them, when she became a citizen, testifying that it was a real marriage.

hmmmmmmmmmmm...it's gonna take longer than 2 years to complete that assignment of being a "permanent resident".

I know......I am an American woman and fell in love with a "hot" Canadian guy..........but he was already in the process of getting his TN Visa because he had a job in the States......

WE have been married 4 years...........the INS isn't playing games here. They want DEFINITE proof that you have a concrete, REAL marriage before that Permanent Resident CARD appears...WE know....my "hot" Canadian hubby just got approved for that card.........YAHOOOOO!!!

    You can't fool the INS....

I just talked to my friend and he agreed that the whole marriage for a visa is a bad idea. However I have heard that if you have a good lawyer, you can arrange things much faster if you do want to go through with a marriage. Lots of paperwork I guess.

I had a friend who did it but her reasons were a lot different. She was close friends with an Italian family and they had been in the US since their son was 7. Before that they lived in Africa for a while so their son had not been in Italy since he was a baby. When the son turned 18 the INS was going to send the son back to Italy and make him apply from there to come back. In Italy you have to serve a year in their armed forces when you turn 18 (or at least at that time) so he would have been forced into the armed forces of a country he had not lived in since being a baby. The family asked my friend to do it and she did. Not for money, but to help her good friends. After a couple years they divorce and went about their lives. But the weird thing is that they did not seem to have much trouble with the INS. They did not even live together. Maybe they just did not care as much because he had been here for so long already and you could not tell that he was not a native of our country?

when we got an attorney, it took nearly a yr to get the green card and then only a 2 yr temporary one at that.. . He couldn't work for 6 months. There are strict rules and time lines..

I can't wait to see what happens when a yr from now he wants to renue the green card and can't cuz we are divorced.. (AND he doesn't know he is scripturally free to remarry and get some other 'sister' to pay his way to stay)

What a ridiculous waste of government resources. This must be one of the reasons why they are not cracking down on illegal aliens. Pursuing people like this over a technicality. pish-posh!

To answer the question, in theory yes, in practice, it would depend on a LOT of factors.

If she were Canadian I'd consider a lass for a visa, if it were for an American lass, I'd have to think more seriously about it. But damn your countries visas are very attractive, just a shame Canadian women are'nt as decent looking as American gals. Canadian women too can be hellishly cranky, American women just have the most awful accents. Thats my view.
