Baby hostage stabbed in police standoff

ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) -- A man who took a baby hostage stabbed the infant during a standoff with police before officers shot and wounded the man in the hip.

The baby was flown to a Salt Lake City hospital Friday night with stab wounds to some internal organs, but was expected to live, St. George police spokesman Craig Harding said Saturday.

Police identified the suspect as Valentin S. Echevarria, and said the child was believed to be his girlfriend's. Officials were not sure if the child was his.

The child's mother ran to a neighbor and called police Friday night, saying she had been stabbed in the hand by a man who still had her baby in her home.

Officers negotiated with the man -- who was in the country illegally -- in Spanish, but he did not drop the knife and continued to threaten the child.

When officers saw Echevarria stab the baby, they tried to subdue him with the beanbag rounds, then bullets, Harding said.

"It stopped him from doing what he was doing and we were able to grab the child and rush it to medical services," Harding said.

An officer grabbed the 6- to 7-month-old boy and ran him to a waiting ambulance, Harding said.

Echevarria, 28, had been deported recently, Harding said. He was treated and released for a gunshot wound to the hip, then taken to a jail and held on charges of aggravated attempted murder and aggravated kidnapping, Harding said.

Why do they always have to hurt the innocent or use them as pawns. I am so glad the baby will be okay.

No, Sally, what's the southern tip of South America done to deserve that??!! Such an ugly brute would be like graffiti on that magnificent part of the planet.

    You can keep him.

How police manage to keep their cool enough to refrain from shooting a person like this in the groin first, and then the head, is a mystery to me.

    Six,

The fact that they can and most often do refrain from doing what they might like to do is what seperates men that could harm a child from men that would never harm a child. Sub-humans from humans, reprobates from honorable men, feinds from heros. They may have wanted to take him out, may even have expressed in words those feelings, but in the end they exercised control.

I think you do know how they control their actions.Because like you they see the evil and injustice of the situation and while feeling righteous indignation they hold fast their humanity and keep a level head.

Personally I think he would make a great hood ornament for the next shuttle flight!

s'truth Thunder. I know that their lives and jobs (and ours) depend on them doing their job w/o emotions taking over. And, I think that when you're working the situation, no matter how bad, you focus on the situation, not the people/morality/etc. But damn, stab a baby??????

I see that it didn't take the pig long to get back into the States. So much for protected borders.

Why are we focusing on his looks being connected w/ his behavior? Good looking people kill too. Geez. I know people tha are uglier and meaner looking than him, nicer folks you could'nt meet.

That being said, and not knowing the whole situation, I think the officers were irresponsible in not killing him, instead of shooting him w/ beanbags and taking non lethal shots AFTER he had stabbed a BABY!!! At that point, his life should become MOOT and the baby's paramount.
