What's the closest you've ever been to death? ever think "this is it?"

Off hand I can't recall being close to death... but my brother is a different story:

    1. He falls into a canal that he can't get back out of, so I grab him by the hair and pull him out.
    2. He chokes on an orange, so I do the Heimlich maneuver on him and the orange piece pops out.

Now that he thinks it's a good idea to shun me... I guess it's just a matter of time before he kills himself by accident.

Close brushes with death ... yes, a few times.

It makes me think there must be some purpose I am still here. Shouldn't have made it this far, by all accounts, so why is that? hmmm

LOL I couldn't help but laugh at this.

Maybe you should remind him just how much he needs you.

When I lived in Minneapolis, I lived in an apartment building. I was friends with my next door neighbor. I had just previously painted my apartment, and I decided to help paint my friends dining room. We were in the middle of painting, and there was a knock at the door. My friend went to get the door, and I went into the kitchen to wash the paint off of my hands. All of a sudden, I heard a loud "Thud", so I peeked around the corner and saw my friend on the ground, blood everywhere. There were 2 guys with guns in the apartment, so I came out with my hands up in the air. I was told to get down on the ground, and as I was going down, the one cold cocked me with the butt of his gun, and busted my head open. We both were then on the ground, our heads covered with blood, and they asked us where the money was, and the jewelry, and any other valuables. Whenever we raised our heads to answer, we got kicked in the face. The one guy told the other guy to tie us up. We were both laying flat on our stomachs. Blood was stinging my eyes, and going into my mouth. The one guy ripped the phone cord out of the wall, and tied my hands behind my back with the cord, and then tied my friends hands with some of the tape we were using to trim the paint. Then he put a shirt over my head, and a towel over my friends, and the other one said they were going to kill us. The one guy took his gun, stuck it to the back of my head, and then cocked it. My door next door was unlocked, so I told them they could go next door to take whatever they wanted, the one guy said shut up, and kicked me again while the gun was still at my head.. I could not see what was happening, and I had a gun at my head ready to fire. The one guy said to the other to keep us covered with his gun, while he went next door to get stuff out of my apartment. I felt the gun leave from against the back of my head. Keep in mind our heads were covered, and we could not see what was going on. After a couple of minutes, I remember starting to shake like a flounder, and my mind started to go numb. I remember thinking to myself "OK, I am getting ready to die, what should I be thinking of" I was trying to think of what I should be thinking of....Sounds weird, but it is one of those things where you would have to be there....After another minute or so, I didn't hear anything, no noise, no footsteps. I remember calling my friends name, and he answered. Still no footsteps or anything, so I shook the shirt from my head, lifted my head up, and didn't see the 2 guys. I yelled to my friend "I think their gone". I then pulled my hands apart, and got the cord off, jumped up, and took the towel off his head, and he was able to untie himself. Then we both ran out the door screaming for help. Neighbors came out, and called the ambulance, and we went to the hospital, got stitched up, got the blood rinsed out of our eyes, and cleaned. The police took the reports. The next day after leaving the hospital, I was afraid to go to my apartment, so we stayed in his, and for almost 2 weeks we were afraid to leave, or open the door. Whenever we needed to get to another room, we crawled on our hands and knees, because we were afraid of getting shot through the windows. I ended up moving from there about a week after that, and my friend likewise found another apartment. The weird thing was that we could describe the guns, and their shoes to great detail, but what they looked like was a blur. I was so sure I was going to die. For awhile, I wished that they would have killed me, as I would not have to deal with the fear anymore. It took awhile, but eventually was able to handle my feelings.

Wow - Memories! The longest day in my life, but the events happened in seconds. It was during 9/11 - My job building was not to far away from the WTC. When the first tower collapsed I was looking out the window and suddenly the streets, one by one, was being filled with smoke. The smoke was just shooting straight up in the air - like toast popping out of a toaster, but only it was smoke - poof, poof, poof - one square block at a time. However, I couldn't see that the Tower collapsed, b/c my window didn't have a view of the Towers so I thought, as I saw the smoke coming towards me in sequence, that all the buildings in the area were being blown up. Immediately I reasoned - "Damn I have seconds to try and escape." So I ran down the steps (6 flights) and as I was at the 3rd landing I said "this building should go right about - NOW!" As I braced for death I thought - "Damn, I don't want to die on the staircase - Oh well." As a few more seconds passed, I realize that I was still alive, so I continued down the steps only to enter the lobby that was filled with smoke - visibility was ZERO! After a minute or two I saw people (police men, firefighters, and the like) running into my building covered with ashes, etc. It wasn't until about 10 mins later that someone told us that the Tower collapsed, and that accounted for all the smoke. So for a second I thought I was 'toast' - All I thought about was "Damn, I don't want to die on the staircase." It wasn't until I got home that I realize the 'big picture' when I watched from my balcony, the area of the Towers just burning for days.

    Peace - LL :)

Edited to answer - Did my outlook on life change? No, not really. B/c once I left the BORG I realized that death is a part of life, and that death is as natural as breathing. People die every second of the day - What makes me so special to live. I love life and my family but I know it's just a matter of time before it's all over.
