BLOOD -- WTS Questions and Sound Answers 3

*** w91 1/15 p. 29 The Pure Language Unites a Great Crowd of Worshipers ***: ?Jehovah?s Witnesses abstain from blood?

    Do JWs abstain from blood?

*** Durable Power of Attorney (WTS; 2003) with acceptable options for JWs *** : ? I accept all fractions derived from any primary component of blood. ?

If a JW is willing to accept ?all fractions of any primary component of blood? then what is left over from a volume of blood after doing just that? Nothing!

When the WTS says JWs abstain from blood the WTS is lying -- plain and simple.

As an peer said to me recently, ?How does a JW expect me to take them seriously when they tell me because of respect for God they will abstain from blood, and then turn around and tell me in the same breathe they will accept all parts of all parts from blood??

JWs do not abstain from blood. It is a lie to say so.

jwsons, from the Durable Power of Attoney Form that is offered to JWs to fill out now. It is more comprehensive document spelling out specific medical procedures you will or won't accept. It also appoints 2 people to act as your medical representative if you should be unconscious or unable to make your own decisions, primary and alternate, similar to a very expanded "blood card" and is a stronger legal document.

In a recent Watchtower magazine it says all fractions of blood can now be accepted by Jehovah's Witnesses including hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is 97% of blood.

So, no whole blood but 97% of whole blood is okay, says the Governing Body over Jehovah's Witnesses.

The ajwrb.org website notes this too.

People will, however, still continue to suffer wrongful deaths due to Watchtower policy on this, so their hands are still full of ... blood.

Mrs Ozzie and I saw this first-hand recently - medical staff were saying that very thing as we witnessed a man slowly dying from loss of blood.

    Oneofmany:

You made an excellent point but one minor point of clarification.

Hemoglobin represents 14.8 percent of whole blood. I believe water at about 80 percent represents the largest parameter in blood. Dr. Sam has given you the break down at AJWRB for you.

Hemoglobin represents about 97 percent of a red blood cell by dry weight. I think that is what you meant to say. Also, always make sure you point out that you are taking in "dry weight" as well. Because the number changes when one starts talking volume instead of weight.

FWIW, Marvin is making some outstanding points ... as usual.

    Blondie,

When you say that two medical reps can be appointed - would they have more say than the immediate family?.

I say this as I think my mum's blood card has one of the elders signatures on it. If worst case scenario - surely the hospital authorities couldn't allow decisions to be made in this way? Surely the families wishes would be the only ones considered?

    Any thoughts?

i remember one nite at the book study...we were all signing our blood cards.....funny looking back...no one wanted me to be their witness and to stand up for them in the event something happened..but thats okay. i really was not comfortable doing so anyways....but i remember a sister saying to another sister..."dont worry R??? ....you can count on me....i will let you die !!!!! i wont let them give you blood !" and they all laughed....i didnt find it funny....

another thing....i believe the family overrides anything that the blood card says. i know this happened in one case that i knew of. it was apparently quite a scene at the hospital. Then and there...i thought to myself that i do not want that kind of responsibility.

Not only that, were we not taught that life was precious and that we should take care of it and not abuse it....i mean we cannot smoke or jump out of planes....but we can let loved ones die in a hospital room!...does not make sense....something is definately not right here.

FF, that is correct, these reps would have a higher legal standing than a family member. JWs use this point to go over the head of a non-JW spouse or in case both members of a JW couple with no JW family members, can select a JW non-family member to act as their rep.

This document is pretty standard for all people to use, not just JWs. Check the Internet using that term POA or healthcare proxy and your state (or province). It should pop up a site with a basic form.

Files copies with your doctor, clinic file, hospital you frequent (take to hospital for all operations), a copy to each rep, your medical file, and keep a copy in your car.

You are under no obligation to give a copy to non-involved family members or friends. You don't have to ask for any old ones to be returned either which is good for those fading from the WTS so you won't set offf alarms..

If The Watchtower Society ever released this following document (inside yellowish quote box below). then the latest Watchtower June 15 2004 (about blood, link-page under quote box) IS A BIG LIE. If a person can accept all fractions derrived from any main primary components, then how can the 4 main components turning into "Unacceptable" ?
