Oh, I'm sorry Talesin, I guess I missed your post on the Hindu Brahman that rolls in the streets of India for "love."

I do not hold with control systems of any kind, although I think that all religions have some good thoughts. Many are common themes. I just like to absorb all the different viewpoints, and form my own way of looking at life, which is ever-changing and sans religion.

So you are a cafeteria religionist? You pick and chose what you like from various religions without any regard for the context of the ideals?

Fanaticism of any kind is distasteful to me. That is why I would criticize the actions of people like Cameron, who tell others they are going to burn in hell. It's kinda sick, in my opinion.

Well, it's not like Kirk Cameron and Ray Comfort are on broadcast TV or secular cable TV promoting the idea for their book. Actually, they are on a religious broadcasting station that airs directly to "Christians." It seems that one has to go out of their way to see what he does any way. If what they do is so "sick" then by all means don't watch it.

Fundi-Christians just make it a point to go around make fools of themselves (proselytizing), therefore they are much easier targets. Other religions usually wait for you to bump into them, therefore ya don't see them make fools of themselves so much.

Personally, I don't think that proselytizing is making a fool of yourself. After all I have personally witnessed much more follish acts just by goin to the anti-Bush, errrr anti-war parades in Hollywood this past year.

Questioning the mind state of one Kirk Cameron means you're not open minded to the religion of Christianity? Perhaps it is only your mind that thinks this. It's a pretty broad stroke to say "something other than Christianity." For the record, I will say there are both people who get it and those who don't - Christian or otherwise. If one does not, then I don't care how much someone waves that banner, in that case the religion is important because it is "mine" - it's about that individuals identity and pride rather than the religion and what it has to say.

First of all I have looked into just about every major religion, with the exception of Islam, both to study it, during my inital journey away from the JWs, and after I became a Christian. Personally, I don find much merit in the world religions. I rejected Buddhism, Hinduism, New Age, JW's (which I was raised in), LDS, SDA, etc. of the basis of one question. That question is, "What must be in order for what is to be what it is?"

None of the religions I mentioned adequately answer that question. Christianity answered that question in spades. My "pride" does not come from the fact that I know Christianity, or believe that I have relationship with Jesus that will save me from hell. It does not come from my belief that many will be eternally removed from God's presence after death. I get no pleasure from that. In fact that is what motivates a number of Christians to proselytizing. You know concern for the fellow man. However, I think that it is easier for the secular person to think that Christians are a bounch of nuts, wackos, idiots, etc. than to actually look at what the real issue is.

As I mentioned before, no Christian that I have ever met, nor heard preach enjoy the doctrine of hell. How you think that is beyond me. For you to think that of any person is so shocking to me, that I really have no idea how to respond. As I have posted before, it is not that I get some sadistic glee from knowing that some will go to hell. That knowledge is the impetus for me to share my faith, and to point out that there IS a way of escape.

If Comfort and Cameron are actually teaching literal hellfire, then I would say they are incorrect. Because the Bible also speaks of hell as a place of utter darkness. From eveything I have studied on hell, I can only determine that "fire", "darkness", and "torment" are figurative words to paint a picture of an actual place. No place can have fire, which gives of light, in a place of utter darkness.

What I believe hell is, is a literal place that is completely cut-off from the presense of God. The earth we live in is in the presense of God. This is a point Jesus made where he spoke of God making the sun shine, and rain fall on both the righteous and the wicked. This is called God's common grace.

Actually, I first started thinking this way by reading some of Mother Theresa's writings. She was comparing major religions, and showed how they contained common themes.

I don't need to follow someone else's teachings. Some of the concepts I like from different religions,

all life forms are worthy and equal (buddhist)

love described (christian, see 1 Corinthians, chapter 13)

concept of heaven & hell depends on helping others, banquet illustration (buddhist)

earth is the mother of us all (paganism)

That's just a couple from Christ and Buddha, with a shot of paganism thrown in, but do you get my drift? It's not about following circumscribed paths, but about exploring what others believe. Some things I agree with, some I don't.

I don't need to worship a divine presence to be the person I want to be.

There is always something to learn from everyone. I would rather just live in the here and now, and if your god is up there, he will understand and not judge me too harshly. (not making fun of your god here!)

And yes, religion is, in MY OPINION (that's all), used to control people.

I'VE SEEN HIM TOO. THAT WAS ONE OF THE PRIMARY REASONS THE "GROWING PAINS" SHOW GOT CANCELLED. THEY SAID HE WOULD ACT ALL DISTANT AND FUNNY ON SET AND STUUF. THEN ONE DAY HE POPS UP ON THE CHRISTIAN CHANNEL TALKIN BOUT HOW HE'S FOUND GOD. HE'S A LIL KOOKOO IF YOU ASK ME.

well la big dawg, u believe whatever u wish, i do not agree.

the non existence of hellfire is one of the few things jws ever got right. sorry , but my take on this and what i was taught by jws, is that man invented hell b/c of his need for people to suffer , that God never thought of such a thing. please don't tell me that people don't delight in telling others they will burn in hell, i have lived in the south all my life and it is a main teaching down here. If they told the truth, when u die u just die, what would be the need to live a good life? how would they get people to go to church? u will not suffer anymore than anyone else. the reason to lead a good life it b/c we are not animals and we should be here on this earth to help each other. not b/c we fear going to hell at death or by the way, not fearing the big "A "

Proselytizing in of itself is not foolish... it is what the person says while proselytizing that is foolish... they get all hopped up on "holy spirit" and then start shooting off their mouths. That is when they look, act, and say dumb things.

Other religions wait for you to approach them before they start shooting off their mouth... so you don't see it that often.
