undercover....I went to an English-language bookstore to see what books they were selling....I saw Mao Zedong's poems, Thomas More's Utopia, Plato's The Republic, a history of torture and execution, and a retrospective on Ronald Reagan.

This looked like a propaganda piece. I bought a Mao alarm clock at this market. I loved the rich irony at how Mao, the father of communism in China, is being commodified and sold as property...

More communist propaganda art being sold at the market. I just had to take a picture of this because, well, it looks sooooooo familiar, doesn't it? lol

cruzanheart, jst2laws....ty for your nice comments. :)

One thing I forgot to mention about Beijing is that so much of the city is now currently under construction in preparation for the 2008 Olympics. It is truely stunning to see the sheer number of high rises going up throughout the city. In Hawaii in the sixties, ppl used to say that the state bird was the crane because of the ubiquity of those yellow cranes throughout Honolulu, and I think the same could be said for Beijing today. In just one kilometer area covering three blocks or so, I counted 32 cranes. It was amazing. Here are a few pictures:

Game: How many cranes can you count in the first photo?

I guess things are opening up even more. I felt that they were trying to be more "western" in many ways but I also saw resistance to change.

Great pics. The little girl with the cell phone reminded me of my trip. The little ones just loved us "round eyes". They wanted to practice their English on us. They would just walk up and start talking. And they were so cute. (A side editorial: When you go to a country like China and realize that enough people speak English or partial English so that you can get around okay, maybe us Americans can take a lesson and at least try to learn a little of other languages so that we can be more accomodating to foreign visitors.)

Thanks for sharing the pics and experiences.
