I am a firm believer in researching the roots of Christian apocalyptism. Leolaia has done a bang up job tracing the doctrine's evolution from Hellenized Jewish apocraphal writings. Many cultures have had some such teaching however the essential notions of a new age cleansed by fire were adopted thru contact with the Persians. Zoroastrianism was probably the greatest influence upon the development of Yahwehism. Even the idea of a millennium appears to have crept into prechristian Jewish thought from this source. IOW the more you learn the less there is to fear.
