It seems as if the year text theme for this year, "Keep on The Watch" is having little effect on the JWs in North America.

Here are the figures for May 2004

    Spl Pioneers: 260

    Pioneers: 90, 751

    Aux. Pios: 61, 673

    Publishers: 839, 095

    TOTAL: 991, 779

And for last month they were:

    Spl Pioneers: 199

    Pioneers: 91, 839

    Aux. Pios: 80, 041

    Publishers: 835, 695

    TOTAL: 1, 007, 774

For May, the aux. pioneers went down by almost 20,000; the number of regular pioneers dropped by 1150 and total number of publishers dropped by about 15,000.

It seems there is a drop off in zeal.

Truthseeker, you have to remember that historically, April is the big push month for auxiliary pioneering.

From these figures shown, there's actually 20,000 more Aux. Pioneers in July's report than in May's, over 1,000 more Regular Pioneers, and a decrease of 3,400 publishers between May and July

    You're right of course Blondie.

Recently I went to visit an elderly brother in a nursing home, with a JW elder and a MS.

They brought nothing with them, except the WT tapes. The elder went to great lengths showing him how to use the cassette player, as the sick brother is blind.

Then he mentions "do you still witness? Did you know you can count 15 minutes."

And I'm thinking, "this is so not normal."

I mean, think of any other religion - a pastor walks into a hospital, sees one of his flock and then asks them how many minutes have they counted?

These 15 minute increments = 1 publisher, and that's why the US has had SOME increase in the last two years.

They are basically counting people they couldn't count before.

It's an old business trick. If you don't like what the formula produces, change the formula. When I worked for rural water in the 80's and 90's they had a large number of late payments to record every month. If the number of late payments gets too high it affects their ability to borrow money from FMHA, so they just changed the definition of "late" and magically the number went down on the report.

The Watch Tower Publishing Corporation's reported number of unpaid literature distributors went down so they just changed the definition of "publisher" and magically the number went up:-) A business decision by, of course, a business.

Gary---you are SO right! I can't imagine this "15 minutes" being implemented back when I was in! I used to feel really crummy when I didn't have at LEAST 5 hours to report!

If 15 minutes is all that's reqired each month, no WONDER the numbers went up. Of course---we ALL know that this was done as a "loving provision" (cough) for the "brothers" so that those who couldn't get out in the field very often--would feel comfortabe in reporting less time--(wink wink)!

We all know that ANYTHING the WTS does is self-promoting and only for THEIR benefit.

This incident with the blind brother in the Nursing Home made me ill.........

Can you imagine Jesus telling his apostles to make sure all the disciples got their reports in??

Of course not - it's preposterous - just as the so-called "spirit-directed organisation" requires it now. Strange that The holy spirit seems unable to tell the borgmeisters how the witness work is getting along, so they have to get all the publishers to put in reports. Strange, isn't it?

Service Overseer: Did you think about going out in FS while on the toilet???

JW: Uhhh... I don't know... maybe.

Service Overseer: Great! I'll put you down for 15 minutes!

At the elder's school in '02, at which this 15-minute rule was announced and explained, we were told that a pilot program in a foreign country led to an increase in publishers of almost 2% (I think it was 1.6% or thereabouts).

Of course, this hasn't appeared in any WT publication; after all, it's not about artifically creating an increase, it's one of those "loving provisions."

But do the math. This "business decision" led to an "increase" of somewhere between 10,000 and 20,000 publishers last year, without adding a single convert!
