I hope they find these people fast... Twelve divers go missing in shark-infested Red Sea waters

CAIRO (AFP) - Twelve European tourists -- five Britons, five Portuguese and two Belgians -- have gone missing while on a diving cruise in shark-infested waters of the Red Sea, Egyptian police said.

The divers went missing Saturday off Quseir near two Red Sea islands known as The Brothers, while 10 other tourists on the cruise had remained on the boat "The Oyster", police said.

An Egyptian army helicopter and 10 boats were scrambled for a search operation but found no trace of the missing divers -- neither personal belongings nor equipment.

However police said an Egyptian aircraft spotted a group of people at a great distance from the area where the 12 were diving.

"It may be that this group is the same as the group that went missing and that the divers formed a human chain so they would be spotted by a plane," a police officer told AFP.

Their embassies had not confirmed the disappearances as of early Sunday evening.

Quseir is some 800 kilometers (500 miles) south of the capital Cairo.

    Jerry:

Do you need a course in using a dry suit if you haven't used one before?

I'll save you a few bucks. Use it like a BC, and keep your feet down to stop air migration...
    LOL
Alternatively a course might not be a bad idea.
How do you use a wetsuit again?
Would I need a course for one of those???

Boy, you've opened a can of worms. Apparently, neither can the girls...

    MISSING DIVERS FOUND

Twelve divers, including five Britons, have been found after a major search and rescue operation off the Red Sea in Egypt.

The tourists, who included five Portuguese and two Belgians, were picked up after drifting 14 miles in strong currents.

The 12, which includes a British instructor, were picked up in good health after being adrift in an inflatable.

They were found by Egyptian naval boats after being spotted in the water by a search helicopter, a Red Sea provincial official said.

Helicopters, naval ships and divers had been involved in the search.

Mahmoud Elmarzoki, from a diving organisation, told Sky News the divers had been lucky because the water was warm.

The tourists went missing during a dive near the island of Quseir on the Red Sea.

The 12 were among a 22-person group that was taken by boat from al Quseir to an area near a small island called al Akhawain.

    Ross,

Thanks for Little Toe's 30-second course in using a drysuit. Didn't know anything about them. I've always dived where the water was in the 80's except for a Texas lake here and there. Probably the best thing is not to try to figure out how they work five minutes before everybody plunks down into the ocean. I understand you just need to learn a certain roll maneuver to keep the air situated?

I would like to do some drysuit diving, especially to see the kelp forests off the California coast. And wintertime is the best visibility.

Hey I don't need a stinking dry suit...or a new bike (I bought mine last year). No matter what he says, he couldn't handle not having El Machino (coffee) either. He misses it on vacation, that is, when we don't take it with us.

This year he got a new sprinkler system for the yard (is that a toy?) and the big ass SUV...ok so that's mine but it was his idea to get the Excursion.

Still trying to figure out what new toys I got this year.

    Princess,

LOL. A sprinkler system does not count as a toy. Anything for the maintenance of the house or yard does not count.

However, if the husband purchases said toy, i.e., Excursion SUV, but it is acquired by wife, it becomes the wife's toy. Therefore, the husband is due a toy credit, is moved back up to the head of the toy line and qualifies for more toys, i.e., new bike, dry suit.

    (LMAO!)

    Thanks for the plug!

Your lake-diving experience reminded me of a similar dive while on Orcas. Randy and I decided to dive an inland lake at Moran State Park. We'd been there swimming and snorkeling with our families, noted that the water was quite warm, and dove wearing our shorties, mine just a 3ml suit.

We couldn't descend more than 35 feet. Our hands and heads were forming ice.

We did encounter a lot of curious Brown Trout, Bass, Bluegill, and other fish who seemed to have no objection to our intrusion. I found a lot of neat old bottles, and we enjoyed the dive from 30 feet and up.

We'll suit up properly next time.

    And Ross,

Very concise advice on the use of a drysuit. You might add a reminder to exhale all the way to the surface, should the user find themselves in an uncontrolled ascent (I don't yet know how to add a winking icon here...). New users corking to the surface are a common event around here, sometimes newsworthy.

It seems to be the best way to enjoy diving here year 'round, I know I'll have to bite the bullet soon. Or start timing my surface intervals after I stop shaking!

I hope I can join you two on a dive someday.

    Steve

    Steve:
That one is under my general advice for diving, period.

Ross's 10 second tutorial on diving (borrowed from Jacques Cousteau):
    Keep breathing...

On the subject of corwscrewing (ROFL - you said "corkscrew" - juvenile moment, sorry) I've seen one guy do the "Polaris Missile" impersonation where he cleared the surface all barring his fins!!!

I was in another boat, when they kept dumping lead belts on him, as he couldn't get below the surface. The air left his suit with a rush, through the neck seal. He landed on the bottom (70' below) with a thud, panicked with cold water down his neck, and proceeded to remove the belts and inflate..........
