Very few people can really be evil on purpose.
The evil occurs with the preference for darkness - turning from a true glimpse - preferring not to know, or choosing a truth that suits you better.
When I was younger I often wondered why 'bad' people were said to be cowardly and 'good' people brave, because the most badass kids at school were toughest and no cowards, but there is a difference with 'daring'. Many who join christian 'religions' are impressed by the daring (or perhaps audacity) of the adherents. It doesn't discount cowardice, which already occured in the choice of the alternate truth, where the hero of the story stays that way no matter what - in that 'truth' it often doesn't matter whether others are marginalised or even hurt - some call it evil.
