So then, here's a question...about "meditation"

Recent threads have got me to thinking about this.

I've never "meditated," insofar as I've always understood the term.

I always avoided even trying to "meditate," (and still have a reluctance even to consider doing so) because the WTS not-so-obliquely suggested that "meditation" was parmount to 'opening your mind to demons.' Even though I've totally trashed the WTS mumbo-jumbo, I still find in my soul a reluctance to embark on such a journey.

Kate gave me a different perspective last night.

So, your comments, and especially, your experiences?

    Craig

PS: Advance warning; self-imaging is my next query! LOL And yet, maybe they blend.

Craig, I think that meditation gives me a better ability to focus. It also helps me relax. It can cause other things but I will let you find those out on your own. I recommend giving it a try. Just be sure to remember that it takes a while to get to know how to do it.

Robyn, do you use a mantra?

I did meditation on a lot of things while in the group, you know, "spiritual things".I am happy to say the deepest thing I meditate on now is whether to drink a margarita or a whiskey sour.If meditation cannot resolve it I drink both.Sorry I can't be more helpful...CHEERS...

    Onacruise,

Yes I do--sometimes. It all depends on the meditation. I also chant. I love it--It's all good.

You might find this a strange suggestiong, Craig, but something like TaiChi might help you.
Concentrating on the physical might take it out of a cerebral context, for you.

I've never used mantra. I've never needed to
    It's a large topic.

    Really? She asked.

    Not even for fun?

    Robyn:

    What do you mean?

    Ross:

I've never used mantra. I've never needed to

    So then, you "meditate" frequently?

Tell me what it's like: how do you "feel" when you meditate. Is it like a self-hypnotic synthesis of mind and body?

I can't see myself "going there" unless I have some reasonable anticipation of "where" I'm going is going to mean something to me.

I have practiced biofeedback for many years to deal with my chronic pain. I have started Tai Chi too.

    Mantra = focus mechanism

Since I am not doing this for religious reasons, I don't need to use Sanskrit. I just say "chocolate."

I'm quite adept at controlling my breathing, blood pressure, etc., enough to manipulate a lie detector each and every time.

blondie, biofeedback (as I recall, it incorporates alpha- and beta-wave monitoring)...yes, that was something that Kate and I were talking about last night.

So, can what you've experienced be usually be described as "meditation"?
