Work Situation

    SS,

I can relate to this on so many levels. I work in the HR department of a light manufacturing company in Michigan. Our receptionist reports to me and I have been having some "attitude" problems of my own with her.

First off, not knowing a whole lot about the laws in your state, is she considered a "minority"? Since she intimated that she was a "carpet muncher" was she setting herself up for a possible lawsuit that your company discrimates towards gays? Does your state consider gays a "minority"? I'll bet it does. My state doesn't, but a lot of them are going that way.

Bottom line, she should be fired. She sounds as if she's a cancer in your company. You are doing the right thing with her personally. Maintain your professionalism and don't try to be "friends" with her. It won't work. Work is just that, work. You're not there to be friends with people and "hang out". If there are personality conflicts, so be it. Professionals get past these things and move on.

Having said that, I can't STAND the receptionist that reports to me. She lied to me during her interview and she lies all the time about other stuff. She wasn't my first pick, but I was a "newbie" at the time and I let my boss talk me into hiring her. She's little, kind of cute and she has this way of "engaging" men, whether he be a vendor or a co-worker. Everyone thinks she is this sweet, friendly little innocent, but I've caught her in the act of being a hardcore b*tch. If I correct her in any way, she runs to MY BOSS and complains that I'm "mean and unfair". It's very frustrating. Of late, I have been sending her e-mails and cc'ing my boss on them so she can't accuse me of being "mean" when my boss is not around.

I've worked in several different companies and the receptionist position is always the hardest to fill and turnover is usually very high. If they're good, they promote on to other departments. If they're not good, they either stay there, on the fringes, to make your life miserable or they get fired.

    My $.02.

I can only repeat what everyone has said. I was a Receptionist for years with 20+ roll over lines...I was responsible for being dressed correctly, being friendly, intelligent and NOT A B to people.......She needs to go and go now. Her conduct is a smear on the entire company, if she treats people she works with this bad, HOW inappropriate is she to the customers???????

I do know that when I worked at the above positions I helped in shipping, we had a woman there that acted the same way. She was caustic and accused anyone that had conflict with her of "hating me cause I'm a Lesbian" well she touched me on my butt one night while I was working ( a grab ass touchand I let her have it both barrels. She was awfully meek from them on LOL

I think a lawsuit could happen.

I inadvertantly informed corporate she was coming in on her days off to log the sales "up" sheet which is to be done daily. I had said "Well, she was in to do the log." HR said they thought that had been handled and she has not been clocking in 2 days a week. I told them, oh well she has been here though.

I asked, "Isn't that a lawsuit for overtime waiting to happen?" YES.........was the answer. So, I think the GSM got an earful about that as well, because he told her to NOT clock in. Corporate didn't want the overtime and he didn't want extra help. So there she goes.......the bosses blessing and no pay........ LAWSUIT.

That's why I had immediately informed HR of the situation.

Some do, some don't. I've had women who were fine with it and then some who weren't.

Some people are just freakin' weird, SS. I know exactly what you're saying.

The only one to blame is the person who hired her, and the managers that don't do enough. Don't feel any guilt over this one.

    Dear Boss Lady,

In these matters the one who has it in writing wins. Document everything.

Get the poison out of the office.

IF ANYONE SEEMS TO PUT THIS ON YOU IN ANY WAY - PULL A MINIMUS - ONLY ANSWER WITH A QUESTION!

Your Boss "You need to work this out"

You: "Thank you, how do you handle it when an employee refuses to answer you?"

Always push the point back to them and now they have to supply the impossible answers.

    hello sally

firstly i want to say i havent read anything of yours before and i havent been on this board for quite some time so i know i'm probably not telling you anything new when i say that you are really an excellent writer.

    anyways....................yea been there before.

has this woman got a written up job description? it should include a clause on respecting you. even though you'd think something like that would go without saying.

after reading your story i'm left actually trying to figure out how i can a job like hers - you know - getting paid for doing worse than nothing.

I haven't had too many problems with managing women....I currently have an older woman who I manage and she is fine with it. I keep wondering if it is a symptom of a younger woman who can't "get" that this is "work" and so sees you as some sort of personal threat. Sirona

    Hi SS,

Hope you manage to get this sorted out - there's nothing worse than a spineless manager that sticks their head in the sand. Although he affirmed your good work and standing in the company, he 'undid' that by making an unprofessional remark regarding your 'attitude' when he said that you had 'earned the right to be snitty'! Are you completely happy with that 'support' ? Were you just being 'snitty', or were you expecting a level of professionalism from an employee that was consistently failing to meet expectations, so you felt the need to bring it to your superior's attention ?

In light of the worlds general unemployment crisis, I find it frustrating that such people manage to find a job, when there are others who desperately need one and would work much harder!!

    Sack the rug munching bloater!!

Bull! ... at my Politically Correct best!
