Can someone give me the backstory to the United Nations thing? All I know is that the jdubs believe the UN to be part of Revelations. I read the long post earlier about the letter from the UN, but I don't understand the significance. Thank you.

Um the down and dirty version
JWs have blasted the UN and called it the wild beast even when it was the league of nations...then in the 90's they applied for and became a UN NGO, "to access the library"...Then when people brought it to thier attention they tried to play it off, make an excuse, and cancel their affiliation with the UN as people were pointing out how hypocritical it was to call them the wild beast and still be a part of the UN in any way. Viola!

To add to what's been said, in addition to calling the UN the Wild Beast led by Satan, the WT Society has said the UN will destroy all false religion, then will make an attempt to destroy JW's at which point Jehovah via Jesus Christ will step in and destroy this system-of-things (Armageddon). So you see, according to the WT Society, the UN as an agent of Satan is evil. So why would they go to Satan's organization to get a library card? Hence, the hyprocrasy.

To add to what has already been summarized: in order to join the UN as an NGO (Non-Governmental Organization), the WTS had to sign an agreement that they stood by the principals and would promote the principals of the UN. Yet for 60 years they have vilified the UN as a direct tool of Satan to mislead mankind.
Shortly after they joined as an NGO, articles favorable to the UN appeared in the fall in the Awake! magazine. What's the connection? They had to renew their membership every year and agree in writing once again to support and promote the UN. That yearly renewal occurred shortly AFTER those favorable Awake! articles came out. Likely, they included those magazines as "proof" they were keeping their end of the bargain.
So, the WTS leaders are shamless hypocrites, and they have one standard for themselves and another one for their followers. No one but the top leadership of the WTS was informed about this membership. When that association was exposed on this board in 1991, the WTS promptly dropped their membership and then lied about why they joined in the first place.
What was that lie? They said they joined in order to gain access to the UN library. That's a lie because ANYONE can access that library.
