I never understood why they published the "Awake magazine". The Watchtower magazine is all they need for their study.
I think the Awake magazine is more of a bait to catch innocent people door to door, with their scientific and medical stories.

definitely, it is so much more subtle, you can read it and think it's just a normal magazine, until you start seeing the scripture references dotted around, very sly.
MONEY!
You get more for two magazines than for one.
GUILT!
Denying rank and file JW's the liberty to read secular, scientific or political writings; the Brooklyn cosmocrats have to substitue their propaganda versions of same.
PUBLIC SERVICE!
By lifting news stories from outside sources (rewriting them) and printing them in the magazine, the society can claim credit for giving advance notice of certain trends in medicine, science and technology.
BAIT AND SWITCH!
As you mentioned in your premise; Awake! looks like an information source. However, it is an apple with a worm inside. Insidious subconscious doctrinal issues can be spoon fed to the unsuspecting.
MONEY!
Oh, I said that already :)
I equate reading the Awake mag with gaining a college education...
The Watchtower is the magazine for JWs...most WT policies are adjusted and introduced here. The Awake is designed mostly for the public with little Bible content till the last couple of paragraphs in the article.
Like subscriptions in the US, the Awake magazine will be dumped if it ceases to make money.

The Awake is JW Light.
Light on doctrine...and where they introduce the "new light"
I don?t think they make money on the WT or the Awake. With the change in the contribution /donation arrangement, fewer and fewer JWs want to mention donating "to the worldwide work" to the person at the door.
People connect donating with taking the lliterature although Joe/Jane Average JW will try and disavow them of that notion. I have seen people take the literature then when the donating is mentioned give them back. When does a JW mention donating "to the worldwide work" to the person at the door if they don?t take literature.
Thus fewer JWs ask. Ask to donating themselves at the KH?whose to know. Although some have reported putting a donation box in sight or by the magazine counter, I have been to over 30 congregations in 20 states and not seen that arrangement. Even still you could drop in a dollar to CYA.
JWs I know are always forgetting to put the money they do get at the door in the contribution box. I
The WTS is not making money from their publications as in the past. It has taken about 15 years for the engine to finally slow down. I have never heard so many pleas indirect and direct about contributions at the KH and the conventions as these last few years.
Will the WTS discontinue the Awake; I don?t think so. Will drop to once a month, perhaps. Since the study articles (and the New Light) are in the WT, I think we can see it continuing as a 2 magazine/month publication.
Many countries already get the Awake only once a month.
I liked the comment about the Awake being used to bait and switch. I offered the Awake many times and hid the WT underneath.

My understanding is that the Watchtower was originally written for the "Little Flock" (anointed) and the Awake was written for the "Great Crowd" (Average JW).
Over time as the a "anointed" have all but completely died off, the WT has become the main magazine for all JWs and the Awake is just a vestigial publication that just won't go away due to tradition.
The Awake! magazine is used to cover up the Watchtower that you plan on giving the householder. After you place the magazines, the householder suddenly realizes they have a Watchtower in their hands!!!
They can't afford to eliminate the Awake! magazine since this is the door to getting Watchtowers into the hands of the unsuspecting and hopefully getting a convert.
