One of the funniest movies I have seen is Young Frankenstein by Mel Brooks. It is hysterical!

I saw "House of Sand and Fog" and enjoyed it. I did have a little bit of trouble accepting the policeman in a serious role, as I kept remembering him as Rob Schneiders roomate on "Men Behaving Badly"

The best movie I've seen recently was "The Big Empty", with John Favreau, Rachel Leigh Cook, Daryl Hannah, Joey Lauren Adams, Kelsey Grammer, and a bunch more. It is kind of an X-files/Twilight Zone/UFO conspiracy theory/science fiction/mystery/drama comedy, kind of moody and atmospheric, with good performances by everyone. Other favorite films, in no particular order, include:

    Contact

    Gattaca

    Hellboy

    Minority Report

    Artificial Intelligence

    Rabbit Proof Fence

    Whale Rider

    Amelie

    A Passage To India

    Sirens

    Frida

    Hidalgo

I just saw the movie "Hero" today with Jet Lee. Wow, what a fantastic movie. I thoroughly did not expect much from it at all. Hubby chose it, I just went to be with him. THought it would be all karate action. But it surprised me. Yes, just enough action (the kind where they fly like in crouching tiger hidden dragon) but for us ladies, a love story to keep us interested. But a great plot, and a real "moral" to the story. To top it off, I guess, it was based on a true story, history in China. I highly recommend it.

Hero is fantastic. You should try and see Zhang Yimou's earlier films, they're brilliant.

The Motorcycle Diaries are excellent. Even if Gael Garcia Bernal wasn't so mouth wateringly beautiful, it would be good.

My favorite movie in the past year was The Cooler, with William H. Macy. It's a great love story, but it does have explicit sex and violence, so it's not for the kids.

Also, with the same caveat, Gangs of New York. Wonderful cinematography, acting, set design, the whole package.

I also really liked the movie The Count of Monte Cristo. The plot is what you wouldn't really expect. It's one of those movies that you own and yet keep watching it no matter how many times you have seen it!
