I can't imagine a typical dub getting any of this. Most are window cleaners, janitors, and other menail job ppl. They barley know what DNA is, nevermind how it divides, or what chromosones are.

I would love to get an earfull of your disussion with them, LOL!

Once organ replacement technology catches up needs of humans nobody will care about tolemers. Do you care when a lightbulb goes out? Not if you have a box full of good light bulbs. The JWs metaphysically have solved the problems sciend is working on physically. When you have magic it is easy to give what is essentially a body transplant brain and all. One of the watchtowers latent fears is that science will make their new order a reality. They have been around about 120 years you can have full body replacements in the next 120 years.

Organ transplants have 3 major problems supply, rejection, and the inability to attach nerve endings to the new organs. Supply and rejection are both solved by genetic engineering and maybe the nerve ending problem too. The last hurdel is the brain. It is still a black box. So even with new organs human life will be finite. What the point of having an 18 year olds body and dementia.

I really enjoy my friends company and he was an active witness for over 30 years!! He has great qualities, but does suffer as a result of his time with the society. His mentality is splitting apart at the moment and I am desperately trying to prop up his mind with a little 'secular' reasoning to enable him to exist on the outside of the org'.

I am not trying to persuade him to ditch the Bible, just to take a more flexible approach when accumalting knowledge to support his belief system, in this way he may eventually see that the society do not have all of the answers and indeed the Bible needs to be viewed as a record which has it's uses spirtually speaking, yet may be fallible.

The discussions do get very draining at times, but are worthwhile (at least, I think so).

But what what was it I heard then on a tv science show or a news blurb a few years ago that referred to something being discovered they were referring to as "the immortality gene" and the problem being figuring out how to "switch it on" ? I was quite intrigued at the time but never heard any more about it. Maybe I'll go a hunting for more info myself. I also know of at least a couple cultures with physio-spiritual practices involving the attainment of physical immortality (Chinese Chi Gong, Indian Kriya Yoga). I enjoy entertaining a variety of possibilities in this regard.

Most "immortality" genes only work in simple life forms. When switched on in humans or othere complexe life forms they equal "cancer" genes.

Tell your friend that we all have allelic dissentary and can only overcome it by attending five hours of spiritual paradise a week. This "spiritual kopectate" will only work, however, if he/she records aminimum of ten hours a week of sloppin rag magazines and conduction at least one hour long bible study a week. Anything less and the telemeres will sneak up on him at night and render him/her spiritually dead...

Leolai's description of telomeres and their functions is concise and accurate. She explained it much better than I ever could and I was a bio major :)

Yep aging is due to cell divisions and oxidizing by-products from our metabolism which ultimately bring on mutations and damage to cellular DNA ... stuff we can't escape but as Undaunted Danny nicely put it --- slow these process down ---- then you'll have an extended span.

You're all bringing me back out from the comatose state I've been stuck in with the Jdubs for nearly 3 decades now!!! Thank You all and the ones who made this board possible.

Yah, but every time we took a dump or pee, we would leave a radioactive deposit.

    ElBlanko:
Reasoning from the perspective of someone who believes in creation (which I assume your friend does), the telomeres finding is important. It would indicate that God created DNA in such a manner as it was time-limited. They protect and prolong the life of the DNA, but are eroded in a perfectly natural process.
It seems to be clear evidence that DNA based lifeforms were only supposed to support physical life a limited period of time.

If that is the case, then (as Elsewhere rightly alludes to) the "Adam and Eve" story must have a different meaning when refering to death (if you are going to retain it as a true to life factual account, which I assume he is).
