my dad and i spoke over lunch the other day about our religion. he told me that he bumped into two of my cousins who are pioneers at the auburn congregation..he told them he was disapointed and was not invited to their party...after he told me his conversation with them he repeatedly kept on saying "the truth". i finally corrected him and told him that was one of the ways to suppress him buy using words like that to inflict guilt and that there is no other truth when there is. after much research saying in a sentence like i left the truth invokes some sort of betrayal. he understood my explanation and i helped teach him to say that religion and reframe from using "the truth"...what do you think?

I think - whether deliberately or accidentally - the use of the term "the truth" is part of the Watchtower's means of control. Like in Orwell's 1984, if you haven't got the words for something, you can't think it. It's a logical absurdity to say "the truth is a lie" but JWs have no other word for their religion. This term and others also act as Shibboleths so that JWs can identify outsiders and apostates.

...the truth they call it. But their truth changes. Yesterday's truth is not the same as today's truth. And tomorrow's truth might yet be different from todays....
The truth is, that the truth does not change, Watchtower rules and regulations and their view of Bible prophecies do.

since leaving i have never said it, but i laugh when i hear other jw's say it, if my mood is suitable i will call them on it, which would be fun, i never hear my jw family never say it.

When you do hear people say it, can't you just kind of hear the capital "T" they use when they say "the Truth"?
A few years after I escaped I was discussing some beliefs of the JW's with a friend and I accidentally said, "We believe......". Gaaaah. I made sure to back-pedal out of that one!.

mole; you did the right thing allways stop a jw when they call the wt the truth. and give them a list of UN-truths that the wt has taught. that stops them in thier tracks. i've been doing this with my dad for years and he will not use the word truth around me. i fact he's very careful when he talks with me . he's knows i'm waiting any opening to blast his bull$h!+ out of the water. john

I've tried to pattern that one out of my speech and say JWs etc. I also deliberately say church when talking to people instead of making them learn the dub words.
