Just had a birthday party for my 2-year old. I just couldn't keep track of who gave what and was wondering how I was ever going to send thank you cards. My never-been-JW husband told me you don't send thank you cards for birthday party gifts. Hmmm, who knew?

Didn't know how much candy to give to each child on Halloween.

Had to call the office of the first church I visited and ask what to wear.

    What a dork.

I knew many JWs that lived very near where John Denver lived They said that it was an apocryphal story, urban legend. Why wouldn't they confirm this story. I have yet to find a JW or non-JW that attended this concert that confirms this story in all my trips to that part of Colorado. I can't find any newspaper or reporter who knows about this and there had to be one or two.

This was always a big issue in my youth. It underlined everthing that we attended. On would ask an attendant what time to expect it , and make a hasty exit to avoid it.

In UK there is no salute, just a standing still while the anthem is played. In one of 'spritually low' spells of my youth I attended an international football match between England & West Germany, with some workmates. I managed to avoid the issue, pretending that I had been standing by co incidence, so that was ok. But I realised then that of course the crowd paid exactly the same respect to the West German anthem (as much as one can get at a football match, anyway) as to the British anthem. I realised then that the act of standing to the anthem was not an act of worship or subjection to the national authority. Rather, it was a simple gesture of respect . As such it was allowed by Paul's words at Romans 13.7 "Render honour to him who calls for honour"

I still observed the JW stance on the issue because I decided to be 'obedient to the F & D Slave' but I always thought it was going over the top

    Flag Etiquette

The following paragraphs are taken from the Statutes of the United States.

    Sec. 171. Conduct during playing
During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should render the military salute at the first note of the anthem and retain this position until the last note. When the flag is not displayed, those present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed there.
    Amendments
1976 Amendment. Pub.L. 94-344 added requirement that during the rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all persons present except those in uniform should stand at attention, face the flag, and place the right hand over the heart and men with headdress should remove the headdress and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart and when the flag is not displayed, those present should face the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed.

Oh man, what a great topic!

    • I am still nervous about saying the pledge and I have yet to do so!
    • I was not sure how much candy to give at halloween, and I ended up just giving tons to a couple teenage boys who were I thought, way too old for trick-or-treating, but were very funny and nice kids. That and I was not so much older (19 y/o). I have never been to a costume party though and every year I just don't have enough friends...well this year I put my foot down and Mike and I are going to buy nice costumes and go to Mass where there are always raves and go to a halloween one. yay!
    • Also during christmas time I am all weird because it is with Mikes family and I have no idea what to do and when to open presents and what is the difference between christmas day and christmas eve. And of course I do not know words to songs.
    • New Years is easy-get drunk.
    • Saying "bless you" is finally becoming second nature. Mike used to get offended when I did not say it but he understands how I was brought up.

My parents are still JW but im not out yet (still baptized, only 17 y/o). For my last year of school i've decided to open up more by trying to participate in extracurricular activiites and just assocciating with friends at school, and I even got invited to go to a football game by one of my friends, but i still havent been able to get invited to a party yet.

at work, this chick started inviting me to come hang out with her. she knows my parents are JW. this has been my 2nd weekend hanging out with her, the 1st one was a birthday party where i went out to eat with her and 3 of her other chick friends. she goes to another school, so the hang outs ive been going to i dont know anyone, but she told me to find out what party's are going around in my town and she'll come with me. i almost got caught last night, so i made up another lie by telling my parents i went to hang out with this one "worldly" friend (first lie was i went to hang out with my witness friends but i messed by getting home at 12). so all i got was 10:00 curfew, restricted driving, and sometimes my parents will follow me, and this is for a month atleast.

i swiftly ended the argument by faking distress and expressing how crappy the literature room management was, i was left to put up the new order by myself last thursday night while the literature boss wasnt there and the 2nd assistent was out congregating.

these few weeks of getting out have been a blast, ive met lots of people (instead of being stuck socially in my congregation),
