Y'all will probably hear on national news that Mt. St. Helens (60 miles N of Portland, OR-my home) erupted today. Lot's of sensational news for what appears to be a fart. It's possible she'll continue farting, have a major eruption, or her guts will quiet down again for another 18 years.

No one hurt. No one dusted with ash. No runs, no hits, no errors.

    Brenda,

The news said ash fell in Vancouver and was headed to Portland. I just stepped outside and didn't see any here. I guess I can't make any ash angels this time. Fricken Florida keeps getting all the cool natural disasters.

Gretchen, who are you trying to kid? The hanging chad incident had nothing to do with mother nature. It had to do with the average age of the voter in Florida being 98 years old. They thought they were all playing a game and kept punching holes in cards until someone yelled out "bingo."

Nothing major happend, its just letting a little steam go. Very interesting to watch though. Just wait till Mt. Rainier blows. Now that will be a site to see. I live above the orting/puyallup valley, so I'll be able to see the mudflow take out the towns below.

There are more earthquakes on the mountain now, and they are at orange alert level, which means they expect another eruption.

    Mulan,

I thought orange alert meant a possible terrorist attack? Can't these guys find a new alert system that uses something else besides colors? Why not ash alert or hot flowing lava alert or get ready to bend over and kiss your ass good bye alert?

I think you need to write your Washington congressman and get this changed. Every time they announce another alert I have to check my box of crayons to know if I should get the hell out of town or not.

I think USGS had it first.

Actually, it was at level 2 at 10am according to the USGS. It's eq's have built to a stonger avg level than they were immediately before the fart. So they actually expect another similar event.

Ash fallout was mostly within 10-15 miles S-SW of the volcano. Ptld and Vanc are 55-60 miles away, and slightly out of the wind path. Besides, the ash fallout we might have received would have been no comparison to the post 5/18/80 eruptions where we got grey snow-like ash falls in Vanc/Ptld. For two years, anytime the wind was blowing we had to wear dust masks outside, and not use our windshield wipers (the ash being scraped off the windshields would scratch the hell out of them).

Last night's ABC news had some great pix. However spectacular they were, they were still minor.

No gases reported other than a very small amount of C02 from a crack in the dome. No magma gasses.

    Just farts.

    Hugs

    Bren
