I just came across this link advertising an award dinner by the Canadian Bar Association.

    http://www.cba.org/CBA/News/2004_Releases/2004-08-17_probono.asp

It announces Shane Brady of Georgetown (Bethelite) as the winner of the probone award for 2004. I'll let the announcement speak for itself.

What burns me is that the Brady is on a vow of poverty, and gets his marching orders from Bethel. He himself is not performing any great service. Besides the fact that the Society has likely written to the Hughes' congregation and circuit in Calgary asking for them to contribute towards the legal costs. Pro bono my ass!!

I loved the line about his switching "Careers" from that of a baker. Nice spin on the fact he was a grunt in the kitchen/dining room at Bethel.

Anyone want to write a letter?

I was LMAO at the "career" "transition" part too. Hilarious.

Y'know, there may be some documentation in the Calgary area requesting financial assistance with respect to the Bethany Hughes case, and in the congregation/circuit where the other Teens Rights? case was.

I wonder what Shane Bethel is going to do with that $1500 award..... I can't wait to see the Look-At-The-World-Bestowing-Honours-On-Us article in a coming issue of Awake!

Ok, I feel like puking now. The guy fights for minors who want to make uninformed medical decisions for themselves while under duress. Nice choices these minors face. Abstain from blood and die. The alternative is take the blood and have everyone treat you as if you're dead, until you finally wish you were. He helps to put these young people through hell and gets an award for it.

Without commenting on the legal issues, I agree that there is certainly a question and a doubt about his work truly being pro bono. In my opinion, it is likely that the Watchtower finances his activities as they do with so many other lawyers who work on JWs cases but especially those who work out of the Georgetown legal office. For example his airfare was likey paid for, his hotel rooms etc. To my thinking, Pro bono describes legal service rendered where the lawyer does not accept compensation from the client he/she represents or anyone who would pay on behalf of the client. I would be surprised if he was not subsidized by the JWs for his legal work and time. Whether or not Georgetown asked for the congregation to also subsidize the legal activites either way it is subsidized by national donations. I am surprised that the Canadian Bar Association would be completely unaware of the JWs legal setup because the largest legal disciplinary body in Canada (The Law Society of Upper Canada) is aware. I guess the two don't share this type of information. Maybe the fact that his legal work would be subsidized by the Watchtower is irrelevent for the Bar when assigning this award.

    Tinker, tailor, lawyer, baker.

What gives with the obsession that the Canadian Judiciary have for WTS 'successes'? At this stage it reminds me of a semi-lucid teenager fawning over the posters of their latest pop idol.

The award will be presented to Shane Brady at the Young Lawyers Luncheon on Tuesday, Aug. 17 in the Winnipeg Convention Centre, Room 2 E-F, during the Canadian Legal Conference in Winnipeg, Aug. 14-17.

Damn. If I would have known about this, I would've held an Aposofest at the Convention Center!

I just re-read my post and realized I made a Freudian slip.

I was thinking, yeah pro(fessional) bone head is more accurate. So what did I type? probone work.

    Excuse the typo s.v.p.

    Thanks

I noticed that. But as usual, my mind went straight to the gutter with it... which is fitting considering how the candidate likely "approval-whored" his way out of the "bakery" and into his current "position".
