Yesterday I installed Google's new search tool: Google Desktop (http://desktop.google.com/)

This thing is great! I have to admit that I am an information pack-rat and I am constantly saving files, documents, scanned papers, images I find on the internet, pictures from my camera, news articles and even things from this website. You name it I am probably hording it.

The problem is that it is getting very difficult for me to find things that I know I have. In steps Google Desktop. It is basically the Google search engine, only it runs on your local machine indexing everything you have. You can then go to a Google Desktop Search screen and do a search just like you would on the internet and it will show you everything on your system that fits the search!

Yes, it's neat - it is great for finding pages that you have looked at and then can't find again !

Yeah, that's my worry....does it report back to Google what's on your computer and does it give Google the ability to archive private information? Hmmmmmmm.....

That was one of my conserns, but the documentation says that it does not do that.

    Privacy and Google Desktop Search

Google is commited to making search on your desktop as easy as searching the web. We recognize that privacy is an important issue, so we designed and built Google Desktop Search with respect for your privacy.

So that you can easily search your computer, the Google Desktop Search application indexes and stores versions of your files and other computer activity, such as email, chats, and web history. These versions may also be mixed with your Web search results to produce results pages for you that integrate relevant content from your computer and information from the Web.

Your computer's content is not made accessible to Google or anyone else without your explicit permission.

You can read the Privacy Policy and Privacy FAQ online.
