No suspect or clues to Thai woman's murder - police
MONDAY , 01 NOVEMBER 2004
Murdered South Auckland businesswoman Darunee Aphiromlerk was out preaching, trying to win converts to the Jehovah's Witness faith, shortly before she died, police said. The Thai-born Manurewa woman, 49, was known to be a hard-nosed businesswoman but she was also a committed member of the Jehovah's Witness Church in Manurewa.
However, police said her Christian faith and lifestyle did not lead to enemies who would want her dead, increasing the mystery of her death.
Her body was found in the Waikato River near Mercer, south of Auckland, on October 21, wrapped in a duvet from her Manurewa home.
Police believe she probably died between 10pm on October 3 and 8am the next day.
"She has had disputes with people but they are certainly not things you would go out and kill someone over. There are no large sums of money involved," Detective Senior Sergeant Gary Lendrum, who is heading the police hunt for the killer, said.
A large television set was missing from her home but police said if she had disturbed an opportunist burglar who then killed her, it was a mystery why the killer would then dump the body in the river.
Second hand traders and classified advertising would be checked to see if the television could be tracked. It was a large silver PT9420 model, which was rare.
Police had no suspects or motives, Mr Lendrum said.
Her last telephone calls were made from her house soon after 10pm on October 3 but police have checked the people she called and were happy they were not involved and it was Miss Aphiromlerk and not the killer who used the telephone.
Incoming calls to her house at 8am the next day were not answered, suggesting she may have been dead or have been taken from the house by the killer.
Her body is likely to be released to her family today for cremation and return to Thailand.
Information can be given on the police hotline, 0800 Darunee (0800 327 8633).
