There was a large-print black Bible from the '70s or earlier that had references and was the precursor of the 1984 Reference ed. I used that Bible in my studies and (when I was in high school) underlined the passages in the Pentateuch that belong to the P (blue pen), J (orange crayon), and E (black crayon) sources.

Wow - this brings back memories. The green bible was the first one that I had. If I remember correctly the paer quality wasn't that good and the pages felt like tracing paper. I remember being quite excited when the black covered version came out with the cross references.

My mum also had a maroon/purpley coloured version with gold coloured lettering - methinks we were getting a bit above our station with that....

Umm, I have compared the scriptures from Mathew that Iz2cool posted up, they read thesame, what am I missing?

BTW I always wanted one of those "Jumbo" NWT Bibles that were briefly printed , I believe , just before the one volume was first produced - in a geeen cover. They went out of print quickly. I still have some old individual volumes.

In what other way has the modern "faithful and discreet slave," assisted since 1935 by "a great crowd" of "other sheep," acted as the modern steward of the Sacred Scriptures? (Revelation 7:9, 10; John 10:16) Over the past hundred years, members of the anointed remnant have kept abreast of the discoveries of early Bible manuscripts. Eventually an anonymous committee of anointed Witnesses of Jehovah produced, between 1950 and 1960, the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures in English. This was a completely new translation, untouched and unfettered by Christendom?s religious traditions.

In this way the fine fabric of inspired words written thousands of years ago in languages not read by most people today was made available in a new, fresh way. Additionally, there are more than 11,400 enlightening footnotes, containing vital textual information as well as alternate renderings, that make this Reference Bible, in effect, a multiversion translation. There are indexes of Bible and footnote words, and 43 Appendix sections giving important information about the transmission of the text and Bible authenticity. Truly, this new Reference Bible makes up-to-date Bible scholarship available to the student of the Sacred Scriptures.

Earth wide, the Watch Tower Society has a large staff of loyal, careful translators who are busy at this time preparing versions of the Reference Bible in other principal languages. As a person makes use of its several reference systems, he will enjoy learning why various Bible texts need to be rendered in certain ways so as to be accurate. Consider some examples.

Bluesbrother, I have those individual volumes too. My aunt has the one where they were all bound together. Interestingly enough, they had cross-references which disappeared from the NWTs until 1984, I think.

As the WTS developed the NWT, they would release what they had at that year's assembly (they weren't conventions then). They started out with the NT>

I wonder what one of those Bibles would cost on the used book market today?

Walter was pointing out how the heading said "John beheaded. 5,000 fed" as if 5,000 people ate John's head. Oh, well.

The person who said about "momma" saying the green bible was black was Bart Thmopson, a D.O. in the 70s and 80s. I heard him say it many times.

I have a large NWT green volume. Now that I look at it and remember hauling this in pioneer service door to door I realize why my shoulders are misaligned. Randy sells all 6 volumes for under a 100 dollars sometimes and probably comes across these once in a while.
