Amazing How So Many JWs Practically Worship The Literature...

Recently, I had to help my mom move from NY...she has just retired and has been a witness for over 30 years. I wouldn't call her devout in that she never misses field service or that she would walk through horrible weather to get to a meeting but she is devout in a sense that she will believe whatever the WTS puts before her...

Anyway, my two older brothers who are also "in the truth" were helping go through what stuff we were going to move when we came to her literature stash. My mom is an extreme packrat and we had been throwing so many items that she had bought over the years without even opening the boxes (the items got old & musty so they were unusable to others ) and the literature was just so many extra copies of Awakes, Watchtowers, & books that were never placed or from when us kids were studying while growing up. Going with the flow, I was about to just chuck the extra items because no one was obviously going to ever use them but my brothers became defensive about making sure that no literature was destroyed!

It is so ridiculous to me how reverent some people become of the literature made by the WTS. I am not insulting current witness or making this a case of "they are so stupid" because I probably would of done the same thing just a year ago...it just amazes me that the WTS has such a strong mental hold on people. It is to the point that people feel intense guilt for just ridding themselves of extra useless literature...

Maybe the WT could issue some instructions on the correct procedure for disposing of unwanted old literature, a bit like you have for old flags. You could burn them in a WT approved brazier, while humming a Kingdoom Melody!

You can tell your brother that WTS want that all literature older than 18 months to be burned. It´s "Old Light" and we don´t want mean apostates to get their dirty hands on it.

It´s harder to rewrite a book than a CD

I remember when I was so confused an upset about my JW upbringing. I was so mad, I tore apart a Revelation book. I ripped the hell out of it. After I got my anger out, I felt terrible for tearing apart literature that came from Jehovah and prayed for forgiveness.

I remember an illustration used by several C.O.s that was used to emphasize the importance of the lit. While the version was a little different depending upon who told the story the theme was the same - The LIT is a message from GOD!

There was an old couple who, upon receiving the new Mag in the mail would drop to their knees at the mail box and give a prayer of thanks. When asked why they did this - their reply was "we have just received a message directly from god, so of course we would give a prayer of thanks."

Of course this does not jive with the the fact that they will readily admit that the literature is not inspired.

Cypher, its all part of the mental control they have over their members. Which is why now that I am no longer a borgette I toss their literature into the garbage whenever I find it on trains or in laundry mats etc. It feels good to be free of guilt and rid the world of cult literature at the same time ;-)

Oh wow... do you think she might have the Jan 1, 1989 Watchtower stashed away?

According to that the end of the world was supposed to happen before 2000. (The Bound Volume version was changed to hide their prediction)

That's funny! They have to hide from their own words!

Who studied that lesson? It appears that they did a 15 minute underlining session so that they would be able to hold their WT high and show their neighbor that they studied.
