Why is it that men are so fascinated by steam locomotion?

I've always been totally intrigued by steam power. I've visited lot's of the country's steam lines. I love the smell, the noise, even the inevitable smuts in the eyes and hair that a steam journey entails.

Well, now I've seen the ultimate in steam powered locos. Hornby have introduced a model electric steam train to operate indoors. It still runs on a "00" guage 12 volt line. However, the 12 volts boils a little kettle thing in the tender which makes steam which makes the engine go.

..and I want one! Drool drool..

If I won the Lotto, I would buy one for you.

My family and I once road on this, and I recommend it if you ever visit the West Coast of Canada.

There's a sound track to the video clip!

I can remember a little steam powered engine in a little model boat my cousin had when I was a little boy. I've always loved steam trains too.

I saw one of those in a little rail/model shop in Betws-y-Coed last week ... looked fantastic. If Angharad hadn't been with me making sure I don't part with money too easily I may have brought one home (they were a few hundred quid though - a bit much for an impulse buy)

I did find a site a while ago that had lots of miniature steam engines (the stationary ones) that you could build (or buy ready assembled). They looked pretty neat as well. There is a name for them but I can't remember it.

There are regular visits to Llandudno ... you see lots of Anorak-clad camera-wielding zealots as you drive past, all waiting to get engulfed in steam
