What "cult-like" practices have you noticed with Born-Again Christians?

LR, I agree that the same types of influences attributed to cults is ever-present within many segments of society. Here's a good article about a new book out on "brainwashing".

...Taylor argues that the processes binding cults together are not different in kind, but only in degree, from those in many other social groupings.

So if this is not brainwashing, what is? Taylor believes that the media can be potent weapons of mass persuasion, controlling the milieu after events such as the attack on the twin towers, and saturating the mind with stereotypical views. The simplification of arguments, the cult of confession and loading the language are all ?obvious features of any tabloid?, she claims.

Her conclusion appears to be that while brainwashing as originally imagined is not practical, we are all a little bit brainwashed by our culture and experience. This is hard to swallow, appearing as it does to put [Jim] Jones and the tabloid press in the same category.

As for making you pay before leaving, I would say that's blatantly wrong. I've visited a great many churches and never seen that one before!

Perhaps a cult sign, as has been mentioned, is that one must accept/believe in/worship jesus, or go to hell.

How about "Join our church, or go to Hell" as the cultic sign? Or "Believe our unique interpretation of a particular verse or go to Hell"? The coercion to cede individual responsibility to the high control group is more the cultic sign.

Making you pay before leaving is ridiculous, but to me expected from churches.

Why? I've been to many churches and have never seen such a thing. Just because a person's first church experience outside a cult is also a cult-like experience doesn't make it true for all churches.

You're right Steph, but the trouble is that the Borg wants the R&F to believe otherwise, so even an exiting dub will be looking for what's been described here.

funny thing is that looking from the outside in, it seems now that it's the dubs who have the palatial buildings!!!

    BTW enjoying the cool change?

    Cheers, Ozzie

    Well penned, Penwell!

My experience with ex-JW born-againers has been getting badly thumped for my expanded belief system. I found that many of "them" cannot have a decent conversation about spirituality vs religion - not understanding the difference - without spouting scripture. When called on the inability to not converse without refering back to the holly bibble or Jesus, I just got more scripture and some such quote about the "sword of the spirit" and "fighting the spiritual fight". My comeback was "why haven't you turned your swords into plowshares? Peace is much stronger than war."

Any "devout" follower of any system looses themselves and all sense of reality.

    Hugs and Peace

I've seen some born-agains practice love-bombing. There are also high-control born again cults. Google "International Churches of Christ" for more info.

I must admit I was nearly scared "speechless". People were running around the church and a few members were banging their heads on the floor and foaming at the mouth.

Crash Test Dummies - Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm Song Lyrics

Once there was this kid who

Got into an accident and couldn't come to school

But when he finally came back

His hair had turned from black into bright white

He said that it was from when

The cars had smashed so hard

    Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm

    Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm

Once there was this girl who

Wouldn't go and change with the girls in the change room

But when they finally made her

They saw birthmarks all over her body

    She couldn't quite explain it

    They'd always just been there

    Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm

    Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm

But both girl and boy were glad

'Cause one kid had it worse than that

'Cause then there was this boy whose

Parents made him come directly home right after school

And when they went to their church

They shook and lurched all over the church floor

    He couldn't quite explain it

    They'd always just gone there

    Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm

    Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm

I've seen plenty of strange behavior from cults . I believe all religion are cults . The catholics carry on like freaks whenever the pope is around I've also seen some pentecostals dancing with snakes .
