I had heard rumors that Bono was studying with the witlesses, so I payed particular attention to the lyrics in his new CD "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb".. If you read the lyrics there is a lot that could be construed as religious, he's obviously being influenced by someone's version.. and I even caught a couple things I thought may have come from the green bible... but then I read the lyrics to this song:

so what gives? Anyone know the scoop? Someone was complaining on another thread about how political he is, that doesn't sound very "theocratic" either. Yahweh Take these shoes Click clacking down some dead end street Take these shoes And make them fit Take this shirt Polyester white trash made in nowhere Take this shirt And make it clean, clean Take this soul Stranded in some skin and bones Take this soul And make it sing Yahweh, Yahweh Always pain before a child is born Yahweh, Yahweh Still I'm waiting for the dawn Take these hands Teach them what to carry Take these hands Don't make a fist Take this mouth So quick to criticize Take this mouth Give it a kiss Yahweh, Yahweh Always pain before a child is born Yahweh, Yahweh Still I'm waiting for the dawn Still waiting for the dawn, the sun is coming up The sun is coming up on the ocean This love is like a drop in the ocean This love is like a drop in the ocean Yahweh, Yahweh Always pain before a child is born Yahweh, Yahweh Still I'm waiting for the dawn Take this city A city should be shining on a hill Take this city If it be your will What no man can own, no man can take Take this heart Take this heart Take this heart And make it break Music by U2 Lyrics by Bono with The Edge Produced by Chris Thomas

I got the whole CD and its great. I would think if he was studying, he would have said Jehovah instead of Yahweh.

Naaa... he isn't using any JW "buzz words". He just likes to say Yahweh a lot.

Prince started singing about a "new translation" (New World Translation) and things like that.

Yahweh is not used officially by the WTS. The Catholic Jerusalem Bible does use it extensively as do some fringe groups like the House of Yahweh. Bono being Irish and Catholic in background probably had some contact with the form of God's name.

"Yahweh" continues a U2 tradition, the album-closing chitchat with the Lord. It's too long and too slow, but that's part of the tradition.--Rolling Stone review

I don't think he has had JW contact based on this song.

Bono is too political to be involved with the JW's. Plus he cares too much about the poor, the sick and humanity in general.

Bono would have to dismantle his entire persona in order to get behind the JW's "no part of this world" thing.

I understand that Bono is a Christian.
That may help understanding some of his lyrics.

I've followed U2 since the Boy album came out some 24 years ago and I'm amazed at his drive to help the poor and helpless. Other superstars have also but after a while loose interest in the cause. I.E. Springsteen and his "I gotta help the working man" image. Bono and his work on trying to help Africa has been simply amazing. What blows me away is that his cause isn't "glamourous" like other causes, I've gotten the impression that he really wants to help these people and this energy motivates us "normal" people to get off of our butts and do something.

IMO - If anything, Bono is the exact opposite of what JW's stand for.
