Astronomy vs. Astrology

When I was about 15 I started building an astrological telescope, an 8-inch reflector. It took nearly two years to grind the mirror. I carried the 95%-finished thing around wherever I moved for the next 32 years, finally donated it to a local astrology club.

I think that anyone who believes in astronomical charts is a nutjob. It freaks me out that Nancy Reagan went in for that.

    Right AlanF,

Talking about confusing astrology with astronomy :)).

P.S. I started grindig my own refractor, but I lost patience after a year or so....

Swan....When I was 10 or 11 out in field service the sisters asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I said, "Maybe a cosmologist". Naturally, knowing nothing about science and astronomy, they thought I meant "cosmotologist". LOL

Yow, Pole! You knew that you had at least four surfaces to grind, right? Or six if you went for an astrological apochromat!

It's sad but probably true, Leolaia, that half the JWs in the world don't know the difference between cosmology and cosmetology. Or their asses and elbows for that matter.

That's very funny! Maybe you have discovered a new profession. Planetary make-overs!

or Leolaia, beautician of the stars!

Interestingly, both fields of study grew from the same root. When early human cultures began to develop an agricultural base, it was very important to know when to plant and harvest certain crops, so as to maximize harvests. The ones who KNEW this were those who watched the skies carefully. They knew when the frosts were over, and when the rains were likely to begin. There may even have been a basis for people born at certain times of year having different personalities and characteristics than those born at other times of year. In earlier times, certain foods, especially fruits, vegetables, and berries would have been in season for only a few months each year, thus some were not always available to nourish a mother with a child developing in her womb. So, depending on when they were conceived, each individual would be a reflection of which vitamins and nutrients were abundant during their gestation, and which were deficient.

*** Bangs head against wall ***

Yup... I had a similar experience. When I was a teen I told JWs that I wanted to do computer work (Programing, networks, etc). Everytime I said this someone nearby would almost always say: "Hey, I know a [ Factory, chemical plant, or office ] that needs someone to do computer work." When I would investigate the job it was ALWAYS data-entry work that paid minimum wage.

When I tried to explain to them that I wanted more in life they would look at me like I was being arrogant.

What is wrong with reaching for greater things? Oh, I forgot, one is supposed to put the Organization first.

GaiaGirl................this was fascinating and gave me a new angle of insight into why the native americans label their moons the way they do............for instance, I am a Leo in the mainstream astrological charts, but, according to the native americans, I am a Sturgeon, born in the Ripe Berries Moon time, my plant is the raspberry, my stone is garnet, my clan is Thunderbird and my color is red. For anyone interested, this info comes from the book The Medicine Wheel by Sun Bear and Wabun.
