Under74,
That about sums it up.
It was so difficult for me that my nerves could not take assemblies, DC's, anything JW with large crowds. It was by far the lowest part in my life.

Under74,
That about sums it up.
It was so difficult for me that my nerves could not take assemblies, DC's, anything JW with large crowds. It was by far the lowest part in my life.
If they are really the "Happiest people in the world", why did my dub family member groan when I told her the subject of the Watchtower study. "Are we trying to convince ourselves?" was her comment. This does remind me of the childrens story about the "Kings new Clothes" . Because the king had ordered it so, everyone convinced themselves that he was dressed in the finest robes. Only a little boy had the honesty to see through it and speak up and say that he was ,like the scripture says, "Poor and miserable and blind and naked" None so blind etc......
you're pressured into being happy and this doesn't work so you have to fake it for the sake of the greater good.
That's it. And since you see everyone else being "happy", even though they are faking it too, you feel that it's your fault and everything else is ok.
Mind you I'm sure not everyone fakes it. I'm sure there are those who are genuinely happy. Happy in their ignorance.
"Are we trying to convince ourselves?"
That's a beautiful suit of happiness you have on brother knowitall.

It actually used to make me mad when "worldly" people laughed and had happy families. It belied my belief that they were miserable and selfish. It probably is one of the primary reasons that those who interact deeply with nonJWs often leave. The illusion that JWs have the monopoly on decency and happiness doesn't work if you experience the opposite.
...those who interact deeply with nonJWs often leave.
Thanks for those words of encouragement! That's what I'm prayin for in my situation..
I only know maybe 15 JWs reasonably well. Out of these, I've been made aware of one having severe mental problems causing marital issues, another with a stress-related illness, another that from my observation is severely timid and dependent on the congo's authority figures, a kid who was severely depressed through his "trials" in school, and one young one I haven't seen for a while who lived a totally double life. And that's what I've learned through very limited contact and second-hand, filtered accounts.
