As many know, I go visit my aunt some weekends. She lives northwest of the city - in a small town.

Saturday evening... I went outside to get something from my car. Most of the lights were off... and I looked up.

There were a billion - and one - stars (and planets) - in the sky. I have NEVER seen so many! It was awesome!

It was also quiet. A peaceful quiet. Nice.

The kind of night and quiet that is good to share with someone special.

    Regards,

    Jim TX

know what you mean: sometimes it is just "glorious" being outside.

    edit to say:

    a year ago I posted:

I just made an evening walk (3km) with my dogs:
No wind - clear sky - full moon.
Temperature 2 degrees above freezing point.
    Came back with tingled ears.
Nobody seen at all - the whole world was mine.

    It was delicious.

Wow, is that area close to the DFW area? I may want to find a place to setup my telescope out there.

    Elsewhere,

No - she lives in a small town near Bandera, TX. (The self-proclaimed Cowboy Capital of Texas)

Interesting that you mention telescope set-ups, though. I saw a magazine while there that she gets from the power company.

In it, they had a satellite photo of the earth - Texas in particular - at night. I could pick out major cities... Dallas/Ft. Worth - is one BIG light... San Antonio... and Austin... with small blips along IH-35 - New Braunfels and San Marcos.

The area where my aunt lives... was all dark.

    Regards,

I find it all breathtaking too. Quite a spirtual experience for me when I look up on a clear night and see the same thing.

I love it! On a clear night, up here where I live you can see all the dippers, & the moon looks so low you could touch it. We are sunrise, sunset, & star watchers

We are just nature appreciators! All but the dogs, they chased a huge buck up the mountain 2 days ago & we were not impressed! (with the dog's behavior, not with the buck, he was just fabulous!)

JimTX.....Did you also see any satellites and space junk? That's the thing I like to look for when I'm out in the desert when I can see the night sky in all its glory. Usually I can see one every five minutes, somtimes there are two simultaneously criss-crossing the sky. Some move in a straight line, some wobble. Once, even out in light-filled Palo Alto, while I was waiting for a train, a particularly bright satelite was visible moving across the sky. Anyway, next time you're out there, try looking for faint dots moving pretty quickly from one horizon to another. Last time I did this, out in the Gobi Desert, I took a few pictures of the satellites....

Another wonderful place for stargazing is lying flat on your back, on a beach near the ocean.........I did that a few years back, and the sky was HUGE and full of stars.......even saw some shooters........

Being one from the city, I don't have the privelege of experiecing the glory of the heavens from all of the light pollution due to street lights, neon signs of advertisements and the skyscrapers in the heavy bussiness districts.

Though while spending time with a musician for a few days, near Pittsburg, I was able to witness that glory. There were virtually no street lights anywhere and at night all of the stars that you could see were multiplied by countless.

It was an awesome experince I will never forget. I imagine you view yourself as truly blessed to be able to experience the smalltown and country life.

God's way of always reminding me of how infintesmally small we are in relation to the universe.
