Why do end-of-time beliefs endure? Good article!

Edntime beliefs occur because there's always a group of people willing to listen to them. Look at your run of the mill JW or SDA convert. Their demographics are usually this: Poor, poorly educated, a person needing a community, and a person that's usually not internet savvy.

And converts lead to a large percentage of the growth in those churches (Even though us skeptics have done a great deal of damage to that conversion process, hehehe).

Those converts are usually destitute and poorly educated, so life for them isn't actually a bowl of cherries. This is their chance to escape this thing called life and go to heaven (or earth) Being poorly educated, they wouldn't know about the tactics of endtime cults, so hence, they're more likley to join these things.

I've noticed that in JW chat rooms, you can tell who the JW apologists are by their poor spelling. And most elders, of course, are directing the congreation one night and are serving their same fellow witnesses cheese and crackers the next night at Wal-Mart.

In an effort to understand this mindset, I actually have started reading the "Left Behind" series by Tim LaHaye and his co-writer Jerry Jenkins. The first thing that struck me was the remedial and juvenille way that the books are written, as if to appeal to the less educated. Every time I really think about it, I find it amazing that so many can take these prophecies so literally. I for one, think that these are just good allegorical stories to teach a lesson...but try telling that to a rabid evangellical christian. These books have sold tens of millions, so I guess there's lots out there that buy into this whole thing.

    Wait, something missing,

there are no pictures of jw around 1973 (international divine victory convention) (the last one)

they were wearing ridiculous big signs "IS IT LATER THAN YOU THINK" or something like that.

Intersting thread Randy. I think folks believe whatever they want in order to cope or fit into the group they associate with. If the Tower came out with an article in the WT saying there is no ends time, but we're God's organization setting an example for all to follow--most JWs would fall into line and fully believe.
