They are having a special meeting in Knoxville, TN. tonight for all the elders and m.s. of TN. Circuit # 1.
After the "apostate documents" from government websites about the DPI/NGO U.N. affiliation and the latest on RAND ENERGY CORP. somehow managed to end up in a couple of truth-seeking elders' possesion that meeting will probably make the Spanish Inquisition look like a 'lil 'ol ladies Quilting Bee.
For an organisation that fought for individual rights of free speech in the courts they sure do a lot of promoting how they really feel about Christian Freedom.
Just wait until Jesus shows his displeasure of them defiling his name....
Quotes,
How is your data organized? Do you have it in a database, or in XML at some point (possible, pre-render, I mean)? What I'm getting at is, it would be interesting to shred out all your quotes so that we have metrics like average/min/max number of words per quote, ratio of max words per quote per publication to the publication length, etc. This would be helpful in vollying back because part of the Fair Use law is based on how much of the work is quoted. For example, if you quote a total of 3 pages from a 300-page book to make a point, I think it's clear your intention is to criticize, not to plagerize.
Given the raw data, I think I could shred those metrics out pretty fast. In fact, it wouldn't be too bad even if we have to work directly on the html pages. Let me know if you want to pursue this.

I just downloaded Quotes' site with Adobe and it came out to be 1,340 pages!
I noticed that there are lots of image files, some JPGs and TIFFs of complete articles and illustrations, as well as audio files (such as the "Strangers" talk). Is the hosting some of this material a legally "gray area"?
Eh can you imagine what they would do if everyone took even a zip file of the html stuff from quotes and posted it somewhere? bwahahahahahah
honesty.. if you hear more about that meeting i know we'd all love to hear about it. start a thread about it if you do!
Okay, I'm getting excited. I want those metrics. I'm going to get them tonight. Quotes, on your site, you have a sidebar on the right that says, "Quote Subjects In Alphabetic Order." Is this the complete listing of all your pages that contain quotations from literature? (I'm ignoring the photos and audio recordings for now.)
Can you zip those pages up and send them to me? I'm PMing you my email address. Or, if you have them in a more structure form, let me know and we can work on that.

Quotes, just for clarification... I see that you're located in Canada, but your webhost mentioned the DMCA, so is the site hosted in the United States?
There are many bad things about the DMCA; but one of the good things is that it does establish clear protections for ISPs. That means that your ISP is unlikely to back out on you, because they won't be legally liable as long as you certify to them that the material is not infringing. More information at http://www.chillingeffects.org/dmca512/faq.cgi
One thing that I've seen that may well be infringement is the wholesale quotation of copywritten works with little or no commentary. That can get one in trouble. Another thing to keep in mind is that copywritten material MUST have a notice of some sort that is IS copyrighted. Otherwise it is public domain. I've, seen several sites that were shut down by the servers because the WTBTS alledged that they were publishing copyrighted material without permission. Those sights were publishing copies of the WTBTS' letters to the congregation elders, and the lack of a copyright notice on those letters made them public domain! Its too bad those folks couldn't afford to fight them. It would've forced the Society to copyright everything making it available to the public through the Library of Congress.
Actually this isn't true. At least not in the U.S. Works now have copyrights as soon as they are created and put on paper or the internet or recorded in some way. There are some older works that are grandfathered however. It is also no longer a legal requirement to have any notice of that copyright. Again- older copyrights (before the law change) will still fall under the same provisions.
Just wanted to clear up a misconception that I learned about several years ago. It doesn't really affect this situation though.

I think you misunderstood what Quotes quoted earlier from the DMCA. Anyone who knowingly materially misrepresents that {material or activity is infringing} is liable. So if the WT makes a big hubbub where no hubbub is due (because no actual copyright infringement has taken place), then they are liable for damages. I agree that the wording here could have been a little more clear.
ok, now i'm confused...my point was that they only had recourse if anyone knowingly misrepresented the material, and i don't see on Quotes' site any deliberate misrepresentation, so i don't think the witnesses have a leg to stand on...
