The "What Kind of Atheist Are You" thread sparked a thought and I didn't want it lost, buried deep inside the thread, nor did I want to hijack the thread.
So, my question is this...
If GOD does not exist, just exactly WHO/WHAT is the god of the bible and how did he/it get elevated to such status?
Another atheist thread

Lingistist scholars and acheaologist know that the Isrealite's were polytheistic just like every one that live in that area. They were not the first to turn to just one true God. They worshipped many gods and there is plenty of evidence that the truly became monthiestic after their return to their homeland,,they took their deportation as evidence that they had offended their war god Jehovah of armies,, and so they rewrote a lot of their history indicating they offend this jealous god and the expungded alot of material from their writting about polytheism but not all of it.
The bible wasn't written in a vacuum the isrealites were effect religiously by the world around them that's why they borrowed from the Persian the duality of a force of good and another of evil and that's where Satan came from.
This of course is my unlettered understanding.

well, just some thoughts here...
I think it's assumed that Abraham was a monotheist but I'm willing to bet that his God was the personal god he chose -El a cannan high god. A mountain god. His son and grandson followed the same god.
In biblical times there weren't explanations for anything...natural disasters, why things happen, how we got here. So, a larger controlling force explains things. makes people feel less helpless. -

I think Frankie summed it up quite well.
For more details, there was an interesting discussion a few days ago:

I think the story of the bible is a manifestation of 'the struggle' that people have been obsessed about forever - Labour v
KCapital; Freedom v Tyranny; "'Left' v 'Right'"; Ying v Yang; Progressive v Conservitive...Atheism (along with beards and blue jeans) are more likley to be associated with the progressive/liberal end of the world, the dead opposite to the arch-conservitive WTS.
IOW, Satan the Liberal v Jehovah the Conservitve....
