As a young JW, I bucked the system and went to college. This was back in the late 80's and I was so sick of hear every broom-carrying, newspaper placing, window washer JW telling me that reading the Awake is just as educational as going to college. This coming from people who hadn't even stepped onto a college campus. Geez.

Next time a JW goes to a job interview and the interviewer asks if they have a college degree, let them pull out a couple of Awakes! and explain to them why this magazine is just as good as a college degree.

    Spot on, Seattleniceguy!

I suspect there's a grain of truth to the claim though. In my experience, the average JW has as much difficulty wading through Awake! articles as typical college students do getting through introductory calculus.

We've all heard the JW claim that a lifetime spent reading the Awake! magazine is equivalent to a college education. Is this really true?

YES...Without a doubt..It is true. Remember the claim is a LIFETIME of reading the Awake is equivalent to a college education.

A lifetime is 70-80 years according to the bible. If a "student" started his college education as soon as able to read and comprehend that could mean he had 75 years to attain his college education.

The Awake produces 24 issues a year at 32 pages an issue = 768 pages Add in the 75 year lifespan =57,600 pages.Weekly seminars held at the KH and special assemblies add to your knowledge and information. The amount of information you could sleep through would be astounding.

Another fact is that in Canada at least you could attain a "college degree" in TWO YEARS. A university education would take four or more years. A Masters degree 5 or 6 years.

I am absolutely positive therefore that at your graveside service they can truthfully say..Here lies another faithful one of jehovah's witnesses who got his education in the end.

They could throw the diploma in the grave with the faithful one. Life for a dub doesn't get better than that.

I think the referencce was regarding to wt lieterature in general and not just awake.

now with the internet you can forget about wt "literature" for all practical purposes but

decades ago it was a cheap and convinient source of information reaching disadvantage groups that was not availble to most people, specially in many parts of the world. Magazines 5 cents an issue, books 25 and 50 cents, to the public..

it did provide a rounded knowledge that could eventually set people apart in many ways

college education is directed mainly in one particular norrow field and does not prepare individuals to become "educated" and organized citizenz.

Most people go to college to get a job or start a business eventually. In the work place and businees world attitude and social skill may count more than specilized knowledge which is always being changed or updated, a manager can temporaly hire an 'specialist' anyway to solve difficult task.

one problen with wt magaznies and books, the "information" did not follow a topic or subject fron beginin to end in one issue it, so it took many years for a jw to become "educated".

    LOL...Hey Poztate,

YES...Without a doubt..It is true. Remember the claim is a LIFETIME of reading the Awake is equivalent to a college education.

I was actually thinking of addressing that but then forgot when I wrote the post. I was thinking the same thing as you - that maybe a LIFETIME of Awakes might be able to match four years in college.

Actually, though, now that I've given more thought to it, I really do think that even a thousand years reading the Awake could never come close to a college education. Even if we grant that the Awake has totally unbiased reporting on a complete range of topics (which we know is not true), their articles can never build on one another. You never get to All About the Cheetah -- Part 2. It would be like reading the first couple pages of every book in the library. You'd know a tiny amount about a lot of subjects. But that's not meaningful knowledge. That's trivia.

College is all about learning and thoroughly understanding a subject. Awake is about giving you two or three pages of facts and trivia and then tying it in to the New System somehow. I just can't believe there was a time I bought into it.

And it's amazing how strongly the anti-college propaganda works. I was talking to my cousin, who is kind of on the fence about what to do with the Witnesses, and he seemed interested in studying Math and Computer Science. I encouraged him to go for it. But he started talking about how professors just rant about their own opinions, and they're not really interested in the students, and so on and so forth. I was shocked - I mean, here's a guy who has never even been to college, and somehow he has all these opinions.

So for any JW lurkers out there, let me tell you, college is a tremendously powerful educational experience. It is nothing like what the Witnesses describe. Go down to your local community college, sign up for a course or two, and check it out. Education is one of the best things you can do for yourself.

omg...it is so absurd they would make this statement when, they wouldn't allow us to go to college because we wouldn't be "spiritual"...

When I hear that analogy it infuriates me to death!!! I had to give up 2 college scholarships to be considered spiritual and now they want to compare a magazine to college which college was a forbidden fruit in the 70's............geez...

Sorry, my soapbox won't let me down.......lol

Well... I just hope no one decides that he/she is able to perform surgery just because "I've read about it in Awake! for many many years..."

...I suppose getting a college degree from reading the Awake magazine for 20 years might be equivalent to obtaining the same college degree from one of those internet academies...
