Yes - I heard this on the radio yesterday morning - but publicans were saying although they will be able to, it isn't practical so therefore unlikely. One concern was getting members of staff home during the early hours of the morning.
I think the only people who actually want this are Tony Blair and drink companies.
It will lead to yet more drain on the police and health services.
Dumb idea.
My home town was the trial for this over the last 2 years and it seems to have worked ok.
Great now all the wives of england will have to wait till morning for their dumb hubbies to come home after a night out with the boys, ha ha. Seriously though, now the alcoholics can drink all night and drive home in the morning, yeah! I can see a dance club being opened till 3 or 4 for ppl wanting to party and dance the night away, but all pubs open 24/7, yikes! I bet it won't become a reality for all pubs, some will stay open but many employers won't because not too many staff will want to work backshift at a pub.
Oh to be in England now that April is here ------ some poem I one read
The idea behind this 24 hr thing is so that at turning out times all the yobbo's dont meet up and start brawling. The police are real busy at 2 am in the mornings because of the current situation. By giving it a 24 hour bash, all the yobbo's leave at various times and a lot of the fighting will decrease! Well thats what they hope for anyway.
On the other hand, instead of police dealing with the fighting, counsellors will be dealing with family breakdowns, divorces, abandoned children etc. I believe all 24 hour pubs should have posters plastered of abandoned familes all over the walls to prick the consciences of those who have such families and yet are still sitting in the pubs during early hours of the morning. it is a disgrace!

I heard that last November that smoking will be phased out of pubs by 2006. Is that true? Then everyone will have more hours not to smoke.
Blondie, they are going to bring in legislation which makes premesis licensed and dedicated "eating" OR "smoking" pubs but not both. It will be interesting to see how the two law changes interact having seen closure after closure of pubs and cafes in Ireland. Some pubs encourage business by providing food, others look at it as supplementing their income, and if they decide to keep food on the menu, as I believe many are, they will not be able to open late for the smokers also.
Does this apply to off licences and supermarkets too?
Always annoying going into Tesco just after 11pm to see your favourite beer is on offer.
