    QUOTE;

    However,if misdirected,self-examination that prompts to look for our"identity" or to search for answers outside our relationship with Jehovah or the Christian congregation will prove to be pointless and can be spiritually fatal.* Never would we want to `experience shipwreck concerning our faith`!-1 Timothy 1;19.

    *Here reference is made solely to our spiritual identity. For a few, mental -health issues may necessitate professional treatment.

    When it says mental health issues, what is it talking about?

    Is it saying, you have mental-health problems if you look outside Jws?

    badboy -

    I don't have the article to compare the context.

    But it looks like they are saying, what they have always said. Ignore the need to be an individual and 'find yourself'. Stay robotic in nature and follow blindly what we say. To much adventure into learning about ourselves and our thinking processes might damage our relationship with Jehovah [read - you might look around and leave the organization if you think too much].

    As far as the mental health issue - that is a standard disclaimer to protect themselves if someone fails to get professional help for mental illness and blames it on this or similar articles. They have covered their a$$.

    Just my opinion

    Christians-be proud of who you are.

    Talks about christian identity.

    I think what it is saying is that one should never seek any sort of religious or spiritual information that does not have its origin with the organization. The footnote is, as someone said, a disclaimer to make sure that their remarks are not interpreted as being a ban on needed psychiatric treatment.

    I think they just put in writing some 'proof' that they do not discourage psychiatric treatment or therapy. This will be handy for them with judges.

    But also, the footnoot mentioning 'oh, this is just SPRITIUAL Identity' trys to gloss over and minimize the fact that they just told you NOT to find your identity and not to engage in self-examination, two things a person MUST do to be a healthy human and a grown-up. It is just some confusing fog-like words to keep the drones asleep.

    Writing department: ' Someone might start thinking about this statement, and realize that it is bad adivce to NOT seek you identity. Better throw in a footnote that helps them explain that away! We'll say we are just talking about s'piritual identity'. The sheep will never catch ont hat a person's spritiual identity is a huge part of their primary identity anyway and therefore the difference is of no consiquence.'

    It should read:

    However,if properly directed, self-examination that prompts to look for our "identity" or to search for answers outside our relationship with the Watchtower will prove to be detrimental to the organization and can result in Spiritual freedom. Never would we want to trust in a cult for spiritual direction!

    The scary part is, Who decides what is a spiritual matter and what a mental health matter? The individual? I'd say it would be more likely the elders who decide. Spirituality and mental health are inextricably interlinked. Another example of the Watchtower actually encouraging the rank and file and, more importantly, the elders to remain out of their depth.

    By what I can tell it is basically saying: When doing research, only use materials provided by the WTS.
