It is obvious that jehovahs witnesses are not proud of their religion.

I've never been inside a KH but the three around here all look pretty good from the outside...well kept and they all have big "Kingdom Hall" signs. 2 are quite new; the other has been around for as long as I can remember. Hello Concerned Mom, Thank your lucky stars that you have never been inside a KH before. I'll be praying that you remain in the same state as I found you on here; ie never been in a KH before. There is a God after all.

I went to a memorial in England in 2001. There was an eight foot high chain link fence with barbed wire all along the top. The gates closed at 7pm and were locked. There were security camera everywhere and a brother on security inside the KH, watching a monitor. It was ridiculous, but indicitive of the 'negative' reputation that they have in the community.

Another comment: Many JW kids are so ashamed of it at school. Where I work, I have seen JW kids turn beet-red when someone says, aren't you a JW or don't you celebrate birthdays. They don't know how to stick up for themselves and are moritified that someone 'found out' they are JWs. They clearly led 2 lives.

Talk about teaching your kids how to live a double life. What kind of adults does this make?

At times the chain link fence, etc is due to crime in the neighborhood. I agree that it is sad when a KH looks like a fortress, but in high crime areas a chain link fence may not be that bad an idea and security cams used to moniter the parking lots is an even better idea.

Most of tha halls here are nice. My old hall in SE OK always had the light burn out on the sign and they'd take months to replace them. As it was in the country with no street lights, it looked like there was no identifying sign up at all

That was me... I was truly embarressed with this socially-isolating religion. The worst part is that the GB tries to make you different, by not birthdays or holidays among other things, and doesn't even give you a good reason. I mean, if JW kids didn't have to go out in "FS," and if they were allowed to celebrate birthdays, christmas, sing the national anthem... it wouldn't be so bad, except for it being a cult.

In 1997 my congregation? and others build a new Kingdom Hall? in an industrial area. It was actually a Kingdom Hall? complex, and contained 3 halls. The property was fenced off, and the place looked more like a "compound" than a place of worship. Many of the halls around here are taking on this new look. Even in my most recent hall, when it was renovated new walls were erected inside the building to seal off the main hall from the main entrance.

I wonder how long it will be before they build stone walls and guard towers around them.

Just an observation: Vandalism of signs in some areas has been a chronic problem and I notice in my city that churches in general are somewhat more discreet in the amount of space they devote to signs. Thus the relative inaccessibility and small signs etc may be a practical attempt to deflect unwanted attention from vandals.
