I must be an old fart, but I gotta' a real problem with OPC's or other peoples children. You know the kind you see in the supermarket runnin around like a buncha' wild indians, (no offense to any Indians), but could you just smack dem' lil' suckers, or what?

Then, there's the one in the record department of the Borders Books, he's justa' flippin thru the CD's while listening to Ludacris or some foolishness on the headphone listening station, be-boppin his head and just makin' a mess of all the CD's that happen to be in ma' peoples section. And it appears that the only music that is outta' order is, yep, you guessed it, the Black Music Section.

I tells dis' little itchit " That's the reason nobody can find anything because you all come in here and make a mess of all the music", he tries to tell me that he was just puttin it back where it came from, I tell's him you just moved Issac Hayes from here and put it over there, his daddy musta' seen me havin a problem with him, silently walks up to remove him from the situation, as I truly had my shorts in a knot.

Peoples, do you say anything to these 3ft. terrorist or do you quietly just walk away out of fear of reprisal from one of their parents getting upset, and then you have an entirely different situation, or do you step up to the plate regardless for what repercussions may come up?

I was in a Borders once-with a girl no less- and some little bastard thought he'd try some Micky Mouse bullshit and hide behind a CD rack and throw jellybeans at us. I couldn't decide whether or not to go after him. Better to look like a bully going after some little kid or a pussy if I did nothing? So I went after the kid and snatched the box of jellybeans out of his hands, and he had a look on his face like he crapped himself. I can't remember what I told the little punk, but I made him cry in front of two of his friends. Oh yeah, it was like 10:00 on a Saturday night, and these 12 year-olds had no parents in sight.

I spent 13 years working in a pediatric dental office.

I spoke up quite often to those little angels.

The 8 year old who peed on the toilet seat. (I was going in as he was coming out). 'Get back in there. Clean it up. Noone wants to sit in your pee.'

The charming one who kept kicking the door because his brother was on the other side. ("I don't go to your house and try to break your things. Stop trying to break mine.")

The kid who kept messing with stuff on my desk and interrupting my conversation with his mother. (I regret this one. I took my pen and whacked his hand. Told him 'that's enough'. Mother looked helpless and said nothing. I still can't believe I did that. REALLY can't believe she said nothing to me.)

And if toys (airplanes and such) were flying around, there was a warning: 'If it lands on my desk, it's mine.'

All in all we had great kids in the practice. Some just needed a little 'corrective advise'.

From pediatrics, I went to prosthodontics (mostly people over 55). Some days I really missed the kids... They could have taught some of the adults how to behave...!

I might get into trouble for this, but I don't equate a whack on the hand with a pen with corporal punishment. I am against child abuse, spankings, beatings, and verbal lashings, but think that a whack with a pen falls far short of these.

Would you have whacked an adult's hand with a pen for messing with your stuff on your desk? I would have. Why should we treat children any less for pulling the same sh!t that we wouldn't let adult's get away with, especially if the mother stands right there and lets him? Maybe the mother looked helpless and said nothing because she knew she was wrong for not teaching her little angel to respect other's stuff.

I don't believe there is any study that equates whacking a child on the hand with life long trauma, so don't worry about it. You probably did the kid a favor in the long run.

I was in a library once- a frickin' LIBRARY- and this five or six year old was laughing out loud as he was running down the ailses intentionally knocking every book off the shelf. Every single one; I am not exagerrating one single bit. But get this: his mother was right behind him the whole time! Imagine your stereotypical dumb blonde; that was her to a tee. She was whining after him in her ditzy voice "Now, Jeffery, I really wish you wouldn't do that..." My tax dollars paid for the librarians to clean up the mess.

Tell me, what scars a kid worse, growing up with NO DISCIPLINE or getting a whack on the butt for vandalizing public property?

Oh my have you struck a nerve. Unfortunately it?s not just the children who need a whack, it?s half the adults as well. The bleeding hearts aside (sorry of you?re insulted bleeding hearts) when we were in school, discipline and respect were common place, the norm not the exception. I know we?re pushing 60, and that dates our values perhaps. But, in those days if you got in trouble at school you got in more trouble when you got home. Oh yes, guess what? No students showing up blowing away their counterparts or bombs in the hallways.

Today?s teachers are faced with insults and worse from parents irate that their Johnny or Suzy was corrected, or failed, or didn?t get an A for the F quality work they turned in. Give the parents detention too.

We raised our three with a whack on the bottom in they needed it, and guess what? They?re still here functioning and doing well in their respective practices. They don?t need analysis, they don?t hate us or blame us for some imagined damage to their psyche because we made them live to a moral standard. So bring back some discipline (not abuse) and teach respect and values.

    LOL

    3ft. terrorist

It's the 5 ft 10", nose picking, farting in public, throwing their Macdonald's garbage out the window, while they cut you off in traffic terrorists you have to blame.

If you say/do nothing, then you condone it.
