Smokers - How do you justify it to yourself?

I am 4 months quit this Saturday.

After smoking for 25 years, I thought I couldn't do it. I hate being told I HAVE to do something.

I got really sick in October (bad cold, lots of coughing) and was taking a drag of my ciggie and it hurt, it hurt SO much I got really, really scared. I said "What the f*** am I DOING???" So I got the patch and put it on (figuring if I was gonna be sick it would be worse to be sick AND have nicotine withdrawal.) After 3 days the patch was making me sick (nausea, insomnia.) So I took it off and decided to tough out the 3 day withdrawal.

Then I told my MIL I was quitting smoking and she said, "Ha! As soon as you stop coughing you'll light up again." That infuriated me and so partly to prove her wrong here I am 4 months later. The smell makes me sick now. How did I ever do that for 25 years?

    Thanks MIL!!!!

I don't bother justifying anything anymore. I do what I want to do, and reap the benefits/repurcussions. I no longer over-analyze anything.

Nowadays I don't feel I need to justify myself.

I smoke grass mostly, in tobacco joints. I would guess I get through 2 ounces of rolling tobacco every six weeks or so and about 1/2 ounce of weed a month. I know the medical risks in technicolour detail. I don't (and never have as I don't like it) done the classic pot-smokers draw, which is the one major risk factor in the research I've read about pot smoking.

I can go on a three week holiday without smoking at all so really don't feel addicted to either pot of baccy, although will admit if pot is in the house it will tend to get smoked.

When my gf and I have kids we will go clean two + months before we even try; I know the effects of cannabis on sperm.

I dare say I will switch to pipe/bong/vaporiser afterwards, but probably just as a weekend treat, and say bye bye to tobacco, and of course make sure I don't expose the kids to the smoke therefrom.

But that's just my plan; if others disagree with it I respect their right to and my right to ignore them... ;-)

What is "the classic pot-smokers draw?"

I don't see how anyone can get addicted to weed. If so, it's just a psychological addiction, like "i need to get high so I can be artistic" or "some things are better when you get stoned"(movies, etc.). For me, weed is just a because-I-can or once-in-a-blue-moon-whenever-the-hell-I-feel-like-it sort of thing. The only thing I don't like about weed is that it makes me all dopey; and I'd rather be alert and know what the hell is going on.

i smoked pot when i was younger but never got addicted. i used to smoke 20 a day. i have given up and started again loads of times. the longest i gave up for was 6 years - got stressed and started again. this time ive been given up for over a year.

Its easy to start smoking when you are stressed. you kid yourself you will just have one to deal with the immediate stress, then before you know it, your smoking again. its also easy to start when you are happy. you think, i'll just have one to celebrate. everytime i go on holiday i have the strong urge to smoke, bec im relaxed and want to treat myself - that and the fact they are so much cheaper abroad than here in England.

oh, wow. I didn't know that. I thought weed was cheap everywhere you go. I live right on the border of Mexico, so you know drugs are cheap. They had an article in the local paper about drug busts across the border, and said that marijuana is going for $4/gram while cocaine is $63/gram. Liars--I can get a gram for $40!

No wonder there is so much drug related crime in the US - the drugs are really expensive!

Typically pot smokers will inhale deeper and hold their breathe longer than tobacco users.

As for pot not being addictive; well psychologically adictive is STILL aditive, and if you feel you need a drug to do something (have fun, get through the day, be creative), then you are, by definiton, abusing the drug to one extent or the other.

Just because I am a hippy doesn't mean I will try to convince people pot can't ever be adictive, although compared to some drugs its addicitiveness is a walk in the park and generally only troubles really heavy users.

    Was this:

    To elaborate on this:

I don't (and never have as I don't like it) done the classic pot-smokers draw, which is the one major risk factor in the research I've read about pot smoking.

Coz I was gonna ask about that.
Can you explain why it's a major risk?
