Next time you're in Tescos, check out the wonderful range of fresh vegetables on offer.

    Magnificent displays. Eye-catching colours.

    But there's something missing.

    They don't smell of anything.

Tomatoes have no smell. Strawberries have no smell.

    Where'd the smell go?

It is for that reason I get my fruit & veg delivered direct from organic farmers.

the smell went the same way as the blotches on apples - engineered out or sprayed with chemicals

it's more expensive but buy from organic farms, in Bristol there are a couple fo places that do organic boxes. I'm pretty sure that Weston-super-mud has some good organic producers close by. Try the soil association website - http://www.soilassociation.org/web/sa/saweb.nsf?Open and you should be able to find local producers

Funny you should say that. I noticed this last year. I have some apple trees in my garden and they smell really strong (especially when I don't pick them and they lie fermenting into cider on the lawn). I used up the last of them around September time and went back to buying them from Tescos and the lack of taste and smell in comparison was astonishing!

Maybe it's due to your advancing age. Apparently things don't work as well when you're 104

Hey, Tesco and Asda and Sainsburys have the one thing I crave that doesn't exist over here: Yummy Indian TV dinners. Totally blows away any microwaveable meals you can get in the States.

Yeah, welcome to mediocrity. Everything the same, all to the same (low) standard that can be attained by all.

Not that Tesco is *bad* ... it's just when any big company gets involved - you anly ever get a 'standard' ... never variation or variety which really is the spice of life.

I think food retailing just got a giant kick up the pants in the UK - they have not been dooing what they should to ensure quality and cannot even say where their ingredients come from for certain.

tuh tuh, I'd rather pay a little more and get something local or that has proper provanance
